The Hoatzin
(Opisthocomus hoazin)
What an odd bird is the hoatzin! Related to the breed of grouse, he is encountered in South America in only one region of the tropical forests of the Amazon. The adults have the size of a pheasant, live in flocks, sometimes on land, among bushes, and only fly rarely. Their nests are simple, being built on branches, above water. Until now, nothing special. After hatching, from the 2-3 eggs, the nestlings will come out, which have some unique habits, in their own way. They can leave the nest in case of a danger, just as soon as they have gotten out from the egg and dried off, climbing on branches, both by means of the feet claws and of the beak, as well as by using some claws that they have in the first two fingers of the wings, still kept, alike most of the primitive birds. If the danger continues to threaten them, the nestlings break away from the branch and plunge in the water, where they can swim and dive easily, making themselves scarce.
