    The Okapi

    (Okapia johnstoni)

Until the year 1901, the fact that the well-known giraffe has a close relative that also lives in Africa was unknown. The Congo natives were telling about the existence of a mysterious animal through the dark and difficult to penetrate forests, but nobody proved the firmness of these statements yet. Only in the beginning of our century, detailed researches have led to the discovery of this animal, which has proven to be part of the giraffe lineage and whose ancestors were long ago extinct from the surface of Earth. The okapi name was given by the natives that knew her. The okapi lives in the secular, humid and hard to enter forests of Congo and Kenya, resembling a large sized antelope. His color is red on the forehead, wherefrom a black stripe begins to the snout; the neck, the chest, the flanks and the back are of a reddish brown color. In their superior side, the feet are striped with white, and from the knee downward, they are of a whitish-yellow. Viewed, the animal seems to stand near a fence, through which the sun hurls, in the upper side of the feet, light and shadow stripes. These drawings have indeed the role of protecting the okapi in the penumbra of the forest in which it lives and where the light that pervades leaves similar shadows on the stems of the arbors. Its length is of 2 m, and his back height exceeds 1,5 m. he has a large head
