Description
How to retain and engage critical employees in this very competitive job market is the subject of many sleepless nights for business leaders. The Philosopher and Professor: 14-Minute Mentor, a collaboration between Industrial Psychologist Dr. Bill Howatt and Business Consultant Tyler Hayden presents a solution to this very problem.
Philosopher Tyler Hayden weaves a wonderful fable about an entrepreneurial business leader who struggles with losing key talent in his expanding business. On a whim he reaches out to a more established business executive to find the secret to his business success over the decades: Mentoring. Alongside the fable, Professor Bill Howatt presents his lecture notes on the theory and practice of building a structured mentoring program. The lecture notes keep step with the story and enable the reader to see the educational underpinnings of Mentoring in our business series’ innovative layout.
The Philosopher and Professor: 14-Minute Mentor offers rich, easy to apply content in a unique presentation that reveals the importance and value of mentoring.

Aperçu du livre
14-Minute Mentor - Tyler Hayden
Foreword
People seek out mentoring for so many different reasons. You may be looking to solve a business problem. Develop new technical skills. Navigate a new organizational landscape. Or give back to a less experienced person or emerging entrepreneur. Whatever leads you to mentoring, one thing I do know is that it can provide rich opportunities for both mentor and mentee. It is an interaction that can provide optimal conditions for learning within the social context of conversation.
When we are given the gift of effective mentoring, we will feel that we can never adequately repay our mentor and we will only be satisfied by passing the gift on to others
.
~ Eleanor Roosevelt
If you think about the successful mentoring relationships you have experienced, some of the following concepts may resonate. A mentor willingly shares knowledge, expertise and insights to help a mentee build their networks and enhance their capabilities. Mentors are both facilitators and teachers – guiding, encouraging, counselling, challenging, listening, and opening doors for mentees. They are often experts, or have a wealth of experience within a particular field, and can be instrumental in helping mentees navigate landmines they may not have otherwise identified. Mentors give advice and make recommendations; they share their own personal experiences and inspire greater self-awareness.
Built on a foundation of trust, the relationship between mentor and mentee often becomes mutually beneficial. The length of the relationship may be short-term or long-term in nature – it is up to the mentor and mentee, as learning partners, to determine how long they wish to maintain the relationship; over time, the focus of the relationship may also change.
Whenever I am asked what is the missing link between a promising businessperson and a successful one, mentoring comes to mind.
~ Richard Branson
A few years ago, I ran across the diagram shown below in the Harvard Business Review. It helps me to reflect on mentoring through multiple lenses. What I find really intriguing about this image is the notion of encouraging both mentors and mentees to think about the mentoring relationship more holistically, to help them properly assess whether they are well matched.
W. Johnson, 2011
Mentees need to be really clear about what it is they wish to accomplish and ensure they have the necessary drive to achieve their goals. Mentors need to have the right experience, expertise and time to devote to the relationship.
A friend will tell you what you want to hear. A mentor will tell you what you need to hear.
~ Shawn Di Lemme
In 14-Minute Mentor, Tyler Hayden helps navigate the essential pillars of mentoring. As you read this compelling story, consider the various types available to you, such as peer mentoring, paired mentoring, group mentoring, and reverse mentoring, and watch for examples of how they are used throughout the book. I encourage you to reflect on today’s realities and the kind of mentoring relationship that will best suit your needs – the right connection can be life changing.
Happy reading!
