Genus description

Perennial, minutely gland-dotted herbs. Leaves are opposite, simple and 3-veined at the base. Inflorescences are racemes or spikes, or flowers solitary in the axils of the leaf-like bracts. The 5 sepals are free. The corolla is tubular and more or less 2-lipped, the upper lip 2-lobed and the lower lip 3-lobed. There are 2 stamens, and sometimes 2 staminodes, inside the corolla tube. The fruit is a capsule with a persistent style. Seeds are numerous.
