      The first chapter of The Road to Character looks at how social values in America have shifted from community-focused humility to individual self-aggrandizement. He quotes Kant's line about how from the crooked timber of humanity, no straight thing has ever been made. Americans in the post-war period, Brooks argues, were aware of their crooked nature. Modern Americans believe themselves to be individually perfect.

      He begins by describing an NPR broadcast of the V-J Day of Command Performance. This radio show, originally broadcast live on the day that World War II came to an end, showed a nation that was noticeably humble despite having secured one of the most important military victories in its history. Though there was jubilation across the country, host Bing Crosby felt compelled to say, Today though, our deep-down feeling is one of humility.
