An insomniac since birth, my earliest memories are of lying in bed at night and making up stories to keep myself entertained. Anytime life got dull, I'd create my own adventure in my mind and suddenly I could be anyone, anywhere. It seemed only natural that those characters who've been bouncing around my own personal make believe world, would eventually find their way to the pages of a book. Each of my characters has a beloved life of their own, and the stories I'm telling about them are just the windows into their adventures.

Prologue
I was born with a boyfriend. Every picture my mother has of me as a child I’m smiling and batting my eyes at whatever boy is currently hanging on my arm. Then it stops being me and whatever boy was currently hanging on my arm. Suddenly all the pictures are of me and the same boy. We have three sets of prom pictures together – his junior, his senior/my junior and my senior, as well as countless high school and college homecomings, fraternity/sorority formals and my senior trip to Cancun that he tagged along for. And then there are the ultimate photo albums – the pictures from our perfect wedding. Since then it’s been more of the same… more photo ops of the perfect couple, Matthew and Megan Mason.
We’ve been together since I was in 10th grade except for a six-month period of wild oat sowing during the spring and summer after he graduated from college. We’re the leaders of the young married group at church. At Halloween all the neighborhood children want to trick-or-teat our house because we don’t just give out candy but provide them with a walk-through of our front yard fun house. We spend summers at the beach, winters in the mountains and at Christmas our two story brick house has four trees with lights that not only twinkle, but play Manheim Steamroller’s bell carol.
And then it happened. Last year on December 27th I turned 30 years old and began making plans to celebrate our 6th anniversary just a few days later. I had the most amazing anniversary celebration planned. Matthew normally plans our anniversaries, but he’d been so busy. He’s a CPA and that time of year is usually the calm before the storm but a major client was working on some sort of merger so he’d been putting in long hours and seemed generally stressed. But I was going to take care of all of that. I had reservations to our favorite B&B in the foot hills of Mount Rainier. We were going to have romantic dinners, and time to just meander through the shops and museums together with no one else to distract us. And to cap off the long weekend I was finally going to hand over my birth control.
It’s the only thing we’d ever fought about, and the fights were never a big deal. Matthew had been ready to have a baby since right after we got married, but I felt like we should wait… spend time enjoying just us. I’ve always known that when I started a family I’d want to take a step back from my career but I did want to focus on my career for a few years. I love teaching high school French and coaching JV and Varsity Cheerleaders. It’s important to me and something I’m good at.
But at 30 and after six years of marriage it seemed that the time was right to transform the perfect couple into the perfect family of three… followed by the perfect family of four and maybe five, depending on what we had when. I had wrapped a stunning black negligee along with my diaphragm. If he didn’t get the point, I would be crushed.
But at just after midnight on December 28th he came in, after working late. I was in bed watching TV, but he didn’t speak to me. He simply crossed the floor, opened the closet door and took out his suitcase.
What are you doing? Are we going somewhere?
I asked, wondering if this was some sort of surprise anniversary trip. Romantic yes, but I would be extremely aggravated since he’d said he wasn’t planning anything and I’d taken care of it.
Finally he turned to me. He flipped on the light and I saw that he had the beginning of a bruise forming around his eye.
Oh my goodness! What happened? Are you okay?
I asked jumping to my feet to check on him, but then there was something in his look that stopped me dead. What’s going on?
I can’t do this anymore.
He answered, suddenly sinking into the chair across the room. I’m having an affair. It doesn’t matter who she is. She’s married too and her husband found out. I’m leaving.
He stated shakily before running his hands through his thick brown hair. I should leave.
When something dies inside of you, it should be a bigger deal. There should be blood or an explosion or convulsions of some sort. But there was none of that. I simply felt some part of me, maybe some part I’d never even known existed, suddenly cease to exist. I remember hearing myself talk, and wondering who was talking because it was inconceivable that I could be talking right now when part of me was dying. But it was me talking. I asked, Would you be leaving if her husband hadn’t found out?
"I don’t know. No… yes. Maybe not tonight, but I was leaving. I was planning to
