The Undergods (Episode 3) - Eva Kane

    CHAPTER ONE

    SWISS

The sun peeked over the horizon just as Swiss pulled into the private jet’s hangar. She inhaled deeply, opening her ears to the sounds around her. The nearest human was 800 yards away—a male who’d had a beer for breakfast. Other than that the area was clear, so Swiss refocused in on the hangar itself and took another whiff. No red flags. Nothing out of place.

Stowing her bike in the hangar’s custom compartment, Swiss boarded the jet and took her place in the cockpit to begin the preflight checklist. Fuel was at full, equipment sounded good, and the flaps and controllers were responsive. She made quick work of the walk around, checked the weight balance, and made her way back to the cockpit.

The flight plan was already logged, so after getting on the headset for clearance from air traffic control, Swiss was in the sky and on her way Memphis.

    Cruising altitude: 41,000

Approximate distance: 1,660 miles. Bearing: 91°

    Setting: Autopilot

Summer mornings didn’t get much more ideal than what Swiss saw all around her. The occasional wisp of a cloud passed far below her cruising altitude, casting shadows on the desert floor far below. She needed to enjoy the serenity of it all while she could, because at any moment—

Your readings are very even this morning. Phi said over the comm as if he’d been cued to interrupt the moment. How is the cloud cover?

There was barely a cloud in sight, but Phi knew that. It was a test question. For what, Swiss didn’t know. But with Phi, everything was always a test. It’s optimal.

Excellent. But now I’m seeing nerves edge into your scan. Trepidation is unnecessary. You will be fine. Now retrieve the syringe and let’s proceed.

Swiss wanted to tell him that she had changed her mind—that she would wait until after the op and finish the upgrade on her way home—but that would piss him off. And a pissed-off Phi did not make a good wing man. She had to do as asked, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t pitch a little fit first. I just don’t understand why I need the ability to see at this altitude. When am I going to use that skill?

Whenever you need it, he said as if she were an imbecile. The point is to prepare for any and every potential situation. That involves airplanes. What if you are forced to jump out of one at night and need to identify a landing location or even ascertain altitude?

She pulled the syringe out of her pocket and stared at it.

The longer you delay, the less time you will have to practice.

She glanced out the window. Shouldn’t I drop down to 20,000 for this? No bird flies this high.

Your current altitude is optimal, Phi replied. You should complete the upgrade now.

And you’ll adjust me back to my current settings if I ask?

Yes. As always, I’ll have my eye on your readings the whole time. If we need to reboot, we will. But right now you need to stick that syringe in the vein of your choice and complete the upgrade we installed last night.

He was right. She was 99% there. They’d done all the heavy lifting in the pod the night before. All she needed now was the catalyst, and Phi had been nice enough to let her wait until she was on the plane to introduce it. He’d trusted her. Now she needed to maintain that trust.

Flexing the fingers of her right hand to increase blood flow, Swiss uncapped the syringe with her teeth, found a vein, and slid the tip in. Hesitation was futile, so she depressed the plunger without preamble and closed her eyes as the juice flowed in. For several seconds she felt nothing, then it hit.

Swiss had no idea what her scans showed, but it felt like her brain was being kneaded like dough as new processing pathways formed in her brain. Even sitting in the pilot’s seat with a seatbelt on, Swiss lost her sense of balance and slapped her face against the cockpit’s side window. Per usual, her equilibrium became totally fucked as she processed the upgrade.

    Open your eyes, Phi said.

I…uh, really don’t think that’s a good idea at the moment.

All the connections have been forged. I need you to open your eyes and start processing images.

Shit. This was going to suck.

Swiss took a deep breath, blowing it out slowly before easing her eyes open and being met with…smudges. What had once been a cockpit was now a swirl of bleeding paint. Phi?

Look out the window and down, he instructed. Your current setting won’t be able to focus on anything closer than five miles.

He had to be kidding. Five miles?

She’d think about that later. For the moment she stuck with looking out the window. There was a quick moment where her eyes didn’t know where to focus and then there it was: the earth, clear as it would be if she were flying twenty feet off the ground.

    Holy shit.

I told you, Phi said. "Your current setting is one of 142 new zoom ranges I’ve installed. These are in addition to your eyes’ inherent function. This setting is also the broadest. It’s what will be available for any distance over five miles. Other settings have much narrower parameters, some covering mere inches. Transitioning between each of these will be awkward at first unless you accomplish a primal state, which you never do. So there will likely be
