Sweat dripped down the back of his neck as he rode, pushing the horse faster and harder than he had any right to. A chill ran down his spine as the sun dipped further behind the hills surrounding Silk Valley. Named for its abundance of silk farms, the valley was a fertile oasis of rich soil and clean water; beautiful, but deadly for a lone merchant like himself.
His destination was Green Rock, a bustling town nestled in the base of the valley. Established at the cross roads of the two biggest trade routes in the country, Green Rock was a market hub and a desirable destination for merchants and smugglers alike. The roads leading to and from the city were fraught with bandits and always dangerous, especially after dark. As the city rose in the distance, his hopes were renewed. The Militia was led by a veteran warrior known as the First Guard; a title that demanded honor and respect from the citizens of Green Rock. It was rumored that the First Guard had more influence in the city than the King himself.

Seen as a punishment, the soldiers assigned to this task were often sullen and unreliable, and many times just as dangerous as the bandits, whom they were sent to suppress. For those living outside the wall, the land was rich with promise, and lucrative enough to risk their lives to farm.
MARAYA THORNLEAF
The villagers rallied around the stone statue; a monument to their once beloved heroine, Maraya Thornleaf. Standing tall in the middle of the city, wielding her two-handed sword, she was a marvel to behold. A wild elven warrior eternally locked in battle with some unseen foe. The King had called on the finest sculptors in the land to create her, and it showed
