Probate
Don the probate is finished. Your grandfather has left you his farm.
Ruth his mother smiles, and looks at her son to see his reaction.
He glances up from the book he is reading, an expression of realization fills his face as he puts together what he has just heard.
Grandpa is really gone, he will not be coming back, it is final, and I will never see him again.
She watches him, and waits for the information to sink in, before speaking.
He left everything on the farm to you, including his old truck, and a bit of money.
For a moment Ruth's thoughts wander back to when they were all together as a family.
Just as she lingers in her quiet thoughts, a loud truck drives by on the front street, bringing both of them back into reality.
Don's eyes widen as he thinks about what his mother has said, This seems so sudden, yet it shouldn't, it has been a year since Grandpa went missing.
Don tries to remember his Grandpa and says what comes to his mind, "Wasn't Gramps a little weird, he seemed so different and he never spent much time with any of his friends.
Mom, he seemed to have spent all of his time at the farm, we hardly ever saw him."
Thinking more about the farm, he remembers it being old, and run down, and he recalls it being a bit scary.
Ruth reflects on what Don says, and answers, "The place may be run down, but it is just a farm like any other farm.
Your grandpa, since he lost your grandma a couple of years ago had not been the same, he kept to himself. He needed space to heal."
He often traveled, but I am not quite sure where he went, he never talked about his trips.
"Even today nobody knows what became of him, it is still a mystery.
There is no proof of foul play, and no body was ever located. As far I know, he had no enemies. All his belongings are accounted for, and nothing in his home is out of place."
She finishes, "Because of the time he has been missing, he is legally assumed deceased.
Even though it has been a year since he has been gone, I can't get myself to visit the farm; I am always waiting beyond hope for his return."
Don looks up from the floor, and the sadness passes.
He questions, Mom what did Grandpa do all that time at the farm, he didn't have any farm animals?
She thinks about what Don is saying, and answers.
As a retired engineer he tinkered a lot, you will probably find things at the farm that he had been working on. He was A-typical in his thinking, so very much different from other people in his field. This is what others said of your Grandpa, those who worked with him when he was still employed as an engineer. His thoughts were far from text book thinking, this is what made him seem so weird to most people. Some would say he was a genius.
Ruth continues, I think you might find some very old relics out there that he collected over time, they may be of some value to an antique dealer.
She reflects, The house is a bit run down as he never spent much time repairing it. When he was at the farm he spent more of his time relaxing, or tinkering on different kinds of inventions.
Don waits for her to finish what she is saying.
Mom I miss Grandpa, and I wish dad was here to help.
She ponders on what Don is saying, then continues,
"Don you are eighteen years old, and now that you have graduated from high school, this is a good opportunity for you. It is time for you to be on your own, you are old enough. You will have the money Grandpa left you, and the summer holidays to fix up the place. It
