About this ebook
This Kinks eBook covers their earliest British Invasion years up to 1970 and their transgender classic “Lola.”
Any kid who can pick up a guitar in a garage has undoubtedly played that opening guitar riff to “You Really Got Me,” one of the most seminal and most-copied 1960s rock guitar riffs ever put to vinyl. It is easy to play and gets your head shaking and the hair up on the back of your neck instantaneously.
Brothers Ray and Dave Davies are legendary in their rock and roll behind-the-scenes antics and caricature cartoonish nature. They really were the original Rock and Roll Bad Boys.” They fought on stage, back stage and involved their audience in the show.
On the other hand, Ray Davies was brilliant at social commentary. He took on social, financial and political inequality YEARS before anyone else did. Songs like “Dead End Street” and “Sunny Afternoon” present a clear and precise point of view that is to be admired and adored half a century later.
I hope you enjoy reading, watching and listening to the content I have put together as much as I have enjoyed researching and presenting one of my all-time favorite bands, The Kinks.
I discuss their music, their dynamic and their approach in this eBook. Check out the audio and video notebooks which go in depth as I “Deconstruct” some of the key songs.

Chapter One: Kinky History
Iconic...Unforgettable and unabashedly British, The Kinks captured the soul of British rock when they first hit the airwaves in the early 1960’s.
Since their formation in 1964 by brothers Ray and Dave Davies, the band has survived the changing pop markets and father time for 50 years, while grabbing the attention of every kid in a garage with electric guitars, bass and drums. Huge bands such as The Pretenders, Van Halen and The Jam would later cover their songs and hit the charts with those newer versions.
The Kinks are known for lead singer Ray Davies biting pop writing sensibilities and his brother Dave Davies’ incredibly hooky guitar riffs, which would later spawn the late 70’s punk, glam and heavy metal movements.
After recording two nondescript singles, the band hit pay dirt in 1964 with Ray’s "You Really Got Me. It shot up the charts in the UK reaching Number 1 and also was a top 10 hit in the U.S. Dave Davies distinguished himself with that distinct guitar solo that has been called the first heavy metal solo. It was done years before that movement ever began. Their next single,
All Day and All of the Night" was another hard rocking effort. It went to number TWO in the UK and number SEVEN in the States.
