    Chapter One: Introduction

The Devil and Tom Walker by Washington Irving was first published in 1824. The story was published in a collection of stories called Tales of a Traveller. It is generally said that the present story is quite similar to the story of the ancient Germen legend of Faust.

It is said that the tale The Devil and Daniel Webster was highly inspired by The Devil and Tom Walker.

Although it is very widely read and popular story, it is not as famous as the other stories written by the author. Some of his other famous works include Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Faust was a legendary name in Germany. The framework of the present story follows him. Faust had done an agreement with the devil and exchanged his soul for infinite knowledge and worldly pleasure.

There are several other stories which follow and explore this theme but The Devil and Tom Walker stands distinguished for its literary techniques and narration.

Besides the legend of Faust, Irving Wallace has incorporated the famous legend of Captain Kidd the Pirate into the present story. Since there are several influences on this story, it appeals to the reader.

When the story was written, the United States was still a growing and new country.
