Right at the beginning, this book asks an intriguing question: what is a school? For most kids, it’s the place they go every week day, and they may not think much about how their school differs from others. This story introduces several kids from many different countries attending a variety of schools, so that readers get an exciting glimpse of schools in different countries and perhaps even different sort of schools than their own. For example, Raphael does to an international school in Singapore, and Johannes attends a boarding school in Germany. Digitally assembled collage illustrations are bright and colorful and draw the reader’s eyes across the page. The book also offers resources to parents or teachers that want to use this book as a lesson, so it would be a perfect classroom activity. Also included is a glossary at the end to help with both pronunciation and meaning of the vocabulary peppered throughout the book. Since the book is based on real children and schools, there’s a ring of authenticity that is often missing in books such as this. Recommended. Grades 2 to 5.
