Introduction
FTD started out as a simple way to put in words what I had felt and was feeling before, during and after my son Max’s birth, so I could have something to give him when he was older as a little memento of his first year in the world.
As I got deeper into my notes and thoughts, I realised that it may well be of help to expecting and new fathers, those who wanted a simple straight forward insight into an exciting time, yet one with some worries and fears. No hard facts or scientific research will be found here; instead some tips and information that I hope will relax some concerns and prompt some further discussion or research of your own. That’s what I enjoyed, reading several sources of information and not have one blanket point of view.
Being a first time dad (FTD) has been the best period of my life, to see Max grow and develop, to enjoy the laughs and tears with our family and friends and also to realise what being a parent is and what we owe to our own.
I have no arguments and viewpoints that suggest one method is not as good as another and if the last 21 months have taught me just one thing, it is that we must take on board lots of information but make it work within our own situations and relationships. New parents don’t need the pressure of other people’s expectations, they need to find their own comfort level and I hope that this short story will help FTDs explore this for themselves.

October 10th
October 10th 2010, my dad’s birthday, the day before my brother’s birthday, the day before Thanksgiving, 7 days after my wife’s birthday and the day we found out we were expecting our first baby.
Joy, excitement, relief and some nerves hit me like a rush of adrenaline when my wife Kat interrupted a fast paced game of COD on my xbox....wow..... I was going to be a dad...... I couldn’t believe it.
All those feelings were shared by Kat, the joy and excitement of anticipation and the relief of finally having a positive result from our friendly pregnancy test, which had been part of life for the last 6 or 7 months....no make that 6 months as I was determined not to have a Christmas baby (just something about waiting all year for two big events to merge into one and then disappear so quickly) so it must have been May 2010 when we started trying in earnest. Certainly not the longest of time to try, but enough to start adding some pressures to re-productive duties and requiring some help in knowing which days are the better to hit the jackpot. Those midday dashes for lunch
at home on prescribed days had paid off.
Well the first big test was the very next day as we hosted a Thanksgiving dinner and I have to start my saying that Kat is a little known for her love of a few glasses of wine especially with friends. Hiding the fact of a non-drinking wife with recent news of a couple of our other friends also expecting is a little harder than you think. Not to worry, along with cooking the crown jewel turkey, I also became chief distracter and drinker so Kat’s glass never remained full nor too often empty, otherwise it was due to be a bad and early night for me. The evening passed smoothly with some additional acting skills from Kat, although a career I cannot see in Hollywood just yet.
When and Who to Tell
When do you tell family and friends that you are expecting. Some
