About this ebook

Best Books Award Finalist!

Ten years ago, Courtney Morgan had somehow found the courage to escape a life of abuse and run. Now living a comfortable--albeit lonely--existence, she's determined to make the most of her second chance. But when a newcomer strolls into the diner where she works, a series of events lands her on a road trip from Arizona to Georgia. After she learns her travel companion has been given a terminal diagnosis and is returning home, Courtney sees this as an opportunity to pay it forward and help, like someone had once done for her. Yet, despite her good intentions, it seems fate is determined to put love and friendship in her path, forcing her to evaluate her own future and what she desires most. Offering forgiveness is hard, especially when that person needing it most is herself. And she's discovering the important things in life are about the people along her journey, not the destination.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. What an incredibly beautiful heart-wrenching story. The journey that Serena and Courtney start together is both tragic and hopeful, the friendship immediate. This is also about three very close old friends who welcome a fourth into their lives and hearts as if she'd always been there. I laughed and smiled and cried.

Bringing to life four unforgettable characters, I found myself hooked from the opening scene with Edith Meyers, a direct, to-the-point, recently widowed woman bent on fulfilling her dream of owning her own restaurant. Her only regret? That her dear-departed husband wasn’t there to share in her accomplishment.Bitter, honest and overwhelmingly outgoing at times, no one could remember seeing Ms. Meyers ever smile. Or care about anyone else, for that matter. Until she stopped alongside the road to wait out a downpour and encountered a young woman near the brink-of-death alongside the road. With no hospitals within miles, Edith does the only thing she can think of to do to get the poor child some medical help. Something about her touched her very soul.Young Courtney Morgan had been physically and emotionally abused for years by her father. She barely escaped and was on the move, desperately seeking refuge, which left her scarred mentally, physically and emotionally. And validating that over the next ten years with Edith and her diner, no one seemed to notice her or even listen to her. But after the abuse she had experienced in her very young lifetime, she was more than content with her newfound safe-haven in the little burg she now called home. Until one day, when it all changed. And she had to run again. It was her only option!Serena Edwards was dying and going home to the comfort of family for support. She wasn’t expecting to pick up any “riders” along the way. She just wanted to go home to her grandmother. But then she came across a woman with sadness in her eyes and desperation in her voice. She had no way of knowing at the time, how important this woman would become to her... in the end.Austin Edwards is also “intrigued” with this woman. Why is she with his sister? Despite his attempts to ignore his emotions brewing up, she’s like no one he has ever known before. And Jake Warner is in denial when Serena, the woman who dumped him, returns home. He wasn’t happy about her return, but after the way she had left, he didn’t love her anymore. He couldn’t love her anymore. But even Jake couldn’t accept that ignoring his resurrected feelings wasn’t anything more than a lie and he would never convince himself, no matter how much he wanted, to not love her still. And the agony and pain he feels to love her again, knowing he would lose her for good this time.Kelly Moran has a writing style like no other I’ve ever encountered. Very unique and rare. Her story plot is well crafted; the dialogue is fast-paced and adds great depth to the unforgettable characters. Not being a romance fanatic, I was quite taken with this particular novel because of the depth of the characters, the ability of the author to bring each one to life for the reader. Moran will hook the reader from the start and hold their attention until the end. Well-written and a wonderful read! I look forward to more reads by this author and will keep my eyes peeled for them.An excellent read!Bookpleasures.comReviewed by Cindy Bauer
