Susan Day

Susan is an author, canine behaviourist, and a storyteller. She lives with her family and dogs, in particular, Rocky the Border collie and Stella, the blind dog. She spends her time blogging, writing and illustrating; training and counselling dogs and being bossed around by the family cat, Speed Bump Charlie and his sidekick, Furball (see Dogs in Space). Susan travelled around the world twice before she was seven years old. It seemed only fitting that the wonderful events she experienced and the places she visited on these journeys be recorded for history. Thus, her story telling skills began. Firstly, to Rupert Bear, her lifelong companion, and then to a host of imaginary friends and finally to her pet dog once the family finally set down roots in Australia. Susan is passionate about children's literature and wants to inspire children to be better people and encourage them to follow their dreams. She runs workshops for children teaching them how to form the wonders of their imaginations into stories. Susan lives in a small country town where there are more kangaroos than people. She shares her country property with four dogs, three cats, three rescue guinea pigs and a very large fish and her patient husband. More about her adventures are reflected in Clarence the Snake from Dunolly.

    About the Author

    CAN ANY DOG DO TRICKS?

Any dog can do the tricks outlined in this book. They are easy to learn and fun to do – for you and your dog.

You do have to watch larger breed dogs. They may need to do things more slowly and carefully because of their weight. Tricks like ‘beg’ can be difficult if your dog has problems with his hips or knees. If you are not sure contact your veterinarian.

Older dogs suffer joint issues just like older people. If your dog is over five be careful with tricks that need to the dog to jump or balance. These may cause discomfort and pain. Again if you are not sure contact your veterinarian.

It doesn’t matter if your dog is male or female. There is no difference between the genders in ability or intelligence.

Some breeds are more agile and intelligent and this will have an effect on the types of tricks they learn. Having said that, most dogs can learn basic tricks just like the learn obedience.

Puppies should be introduced to trick training along with their obedience training. Just like older dogs, however, you need to limit the impact on their joints by not allowing them to jump or beg, for example. Puppies get tired much easier too so you’ll need to keep your training sessions to just a few minutes. You may do more than one a day – in fact, three or four 3 to 5 minute sessions are perfect. That way you’ll get the best out of your dog.

    TREATS & REWARDS

The sorts of treats you use will depend upon your dog and what it likes. If you really want your dog to learn quickly and thoroughly, use a very special treat like kabana or cheese and only use it for this type of training.

Always use treats to motivate your dog. Once your dog knows the trick and understands what you want him or her to do, start giving pats instead of treats. Mix it up a bit and keep your dog guessing – am I getting a treat this time or a pat? This will also build your dog’s motivation.

The use of treats will give you a quicker and more solid response from your dog. You will have to look at treats as a type of payment that you give your dog for doing what you’ve asked. You don’t go to work for nothing so to motivate and get the best out of your dog use treats.

Having said that, it is important that you don’t end up with a treat junkie. This is a dog that won’t do as you ask unless you’ve got a piece of food in your hand. This can be achieved by understanding the three stages of training and using the chaining method to train your dog.

Only use very small pieces when treating your dog. Dogs don’t understand size so something about ¼ of inch will be fine. Even a small piece has the same value as a hamburger or a steak in your dog’s mind. They do understand quantity so if your dog does a great job give it two or more small pieces.

Don’t remove treats too early. It is a common mistake that people believe they are bribing their dog by giving it treats. You are not. Instead, you are building motivation and trust. Look at the three stages of training to gain a better understanding of why we use treats and when to wean your dog off treats.

Use treats in conjunction with pats to really reward your dog. There is nothing better than getting a gentle scruff around the neck for doing a good job. If you establish this your dog will respond quicker and it will make it easier to wean them off treats.

    Pats

Pats and affection are great rewards for any dog of any age. However, if you pat roughly around your dog’s head it may jump and nip you. This is how puppies play with each other but you need not to encourage them biting by mistake. They can handle those sharp teeth biting through fur but your skin is not designed the same way and you may find yourself bleeding and bruised.

Gentle pats under the chin or along the dog’s body have a calming effect. If your dog goes to nip you quickly pull your hands away and say, Ahhh! in a stern voice. It is always a good idea to stand up straight at the same time. Slowly lower your hand down and begin to pat your dog again. Repeat if your dog bites you again.

    Good Dog! Reward Voice

Your dog will respond immediately to a high pitched Good Dog! reward. This is often referred to a praise or reward voice. However with some puppies it can make them more excited and they may become out of control. You’ll have to find out if this happens with your dog by using it. If using a high reward voice does over excite your dog tone it down a bit to a lower, softer voice.

Repeat each trick about 5 times per day only. Do this several times a day if you can. Don’t overdo it because your dog will become restless and will stop learning. Practise every day and you will build a great relationship with your dog.

    GENTLE POSITIVE TRAINING

My dog training philosophy is built on two important points. The first is that dog training should be affordable for everyone. Some trainers and behaviourists charge more than the average mum and dad can afford. This means that the family dog doesn’t received training that can make
