    Have you heard about the term ‘diabesity?’

    This is the term used to describe diabetes and obesity and is considered as the single biggest global health epidemic known to mankind. It is also the leading cause of cardiovascular problems, dementia, hypertension, cancer and even premature death.

    There is one very important fact that most medical practitioners as well as patients impacted by the disease overlook – diabesity is caused by lifestyle and environmental factors.

    What does it mean for us?

    It implies that this is one hundred percent curable you just need to address the factors impacting your condition.

    The current approach to treating diabetes is prevention and treatment (medicine, insulin, etc.). This is definitely not working because we have millions of new cases every year.

    So, what is it that is really required?

    Well, I would say – the real solution lies in implementation of a robust plan through the right kind of knowledge.

    This is done through functional medicine. Functional medicine is an approach that treats the person and not their disease or symptoms. Some people also refer to it as personalized medicine. It is often referred to as ‘patient centered health care’ in contrast to the ‘diseases centered’ approach to treatment.     The current American diet is laden with sugar, salts, processed fats, hormones, pesticides, other additives and some genetically modified inflammatory substances. It does not provide any omega 3, trace minerals, fiber, antioxidants and vitamins. It is calorie rich and nutrient deficient.

    So, the most potent medicine that you can use in order to treat diabetes is real food. Yes, we are talking about real, fresh, non-refined food that you can cook yourself. This kind of food will be nutrient dense and low in calories.

    Here are some of the nutritional changes that you may need to incorporate immediately:

    Eliminate sugar from your diet: An average American consumes around 180 pounds of sugar per year. The vast variety of sweeteners and sugars available in the market is overwhelming. Some of the available options are:

    Glucose, dextrose and fructose are all simple sugars. They are referred to as monosaccharaides. Dextrose and glucose are primarily same, but food manufacturers use the word, ‘dextrose’ in their list of ingredients. 

    These simple sugars combine together to form more complex sugars such as sucrose. This is fifty percent glucose and fifty percent fructose (it is also called the disaccharide sugar).

    The high fructose corn syrup that you so much love is 55 percent fructose and 45 percent glucose (Revelation: looks quite similar to table sugar, right?).

    Wine and beer contain residual sugars and starches.

    Splenda or sucralose is not a sugar; it is just similar to aspartame and saccharin and can offer a host of detrimental impacts on your health.

    Agave syrup, which you have been consuming as a natural sugar is also highly processed and comes with a host of negative impacts for your health.

    Stevia and honey are safe and natural.

    Sugar is present in sports drinks, energy bars, cola, fruit juices and all processed food.
