Chapter One: Introduction
Touching Spirit Bear
by Ben Mikaelsen was first published in 2001. It is a young adult novel. The story revolves around a young boy.
The boy goes through the experiences of violence, nature, and forgiveness when he is banished to a remote Island in Alaska. It is a punishment for a violent crime.
During the period of his punishment, the boy comes face to face with a rare bear species, the Spirit Bear. After that encounter with the rare species of the bear, the boy’s perspective on his own life is transformed. He begins to think about the world very differently.
Although it is a work of fiction, the author has done a lot of research and presented the setting and topic in such a manner that certain realities become obvious in the narrative.
While writing the present novel, the author had visited Alaska and British Columbia to see the setting for his book personally.
In his author’s note at the end of the book, he writes that Spirit Bears do exist in that region. He says that had personally seen a three-hundred pounds male Spirit Bear during his travels thorough the Alaskan region.
The author was the owner of a 700-pound black bear named Buffy. He understands the nature of the bear, and how the animal interacts with human beings. The author had brought the bear when it was very small. He worked hard, adapted it, and raised it near his cabin in Montana.
The central theme of the novel is the relationship between man and animal. It was also there in the real life of the author.
The author did research on the concept of Circle Justice
while writing the book. It was a part of his interest in investigating paths to healing and forgiveness for the people who happen to have committed crimes.
Native cultures often practiced Circle Justice as a tradition, but it has also been used in the court systems in the United States.
The author explains that banishment to a remote island many not be realistic, but there must be some other alternative ways to provide justice, healing, and eventual forgiveness.
The sites in the novel have been inspired by the real natural sites, and likewise the cultures are realistic. An open-minded reading is required on the part
