Our gratitude for family who supported us in our journey to becoming published authors and also those who helped with the editing, story ideas, and gave us a little military background. A big thank you to Angel, James P., Charles H. and Woody for the support and information you provided.  We would like to thank the Animal Clinic, the veterinary office who offered their teaching advice on the anatomy of a canine. Last but not least, thank you Maddie for being with me through everything. You are the best. Love you!

    A New Beginning

    Chapter 1 Kai

He’s waking. Kai is waking! a voice close by announced.

Groggily, Kai felt as if every portion of his body was sore, bandaged, or restrained in some sort of splint. Gingerly he tried moving his arms and legs. His left leg was stiff and heavy and his head ached as if someone had used it for batting practice. Smells came to him strong and pungent. A soft aroma reached his nose before he even opened his eyes. It had a scent of earth, musky and loamy, with a subtle hint of a spring shower in a wild flower field. Kai could also smell something like sulfur, just not as sharp.

He heard the voice again. Something is wrong. He doesn’t know.

Through dry, cracked lips he asked, What’s wrong? Who doesn’t know what? He opened his eyes and looked around at the strange surroundings.

Sunlight filtered in through the window to his right. The room he woke in had cream-colored walls, barren of any pictures or hangings. Finally, Kia saw the woman sitting beside him in a chair. Long white hair flowed down over her, partially covering her face.

She stirred as she noticed the man on the bed looking at her. By the way she moved, the man could tell she had been sitting in the chair for a while. Her beautiful face and blue eyes looked tired and drawn. Sensing he should know her, he was surprised that he couldn’t put a name to her face. He didn’t sense any danger from her or from anywhere else, and although he didn’t know why, he knew he was safe.

I’m sorry to ask this, but who are you?

The woman closed her eyes and with a sad smile on her lips said, My name is Clover. Do you know who you are?

He tried to think of his name, but felt like he was grabbing at smoke. It kept slipping through his fingers just out of his reach.

Finally he said, No. I don’t know my name.

He looked around to see if he could see who the other voice belonged to, but didn’t see anyone.

Who else is here? I heard another voice, the man asked looking around.

The woman named Clover looked out the window, turned back to him and said, She stepped away for a minute. Why don’t we talk a bit first? Your name is Kai and you have been very sick. You were bitten by a zombie here on your leg and almost turned into a zombie.

Almost turned into what by a what? Kai asked as he tried to sit up. Clover gently pushed him back down on the bed.

Please you need to rest. I will explain it all to you, but we shouldn’t try and rush things.

He jerked back momentarily from her touch. Seeing the pain this caused her, he felt bad.

The cold air caused a shiver over him where the blankets had fallen down his chest. His head spun as though he had stood up too fast. Feeling a bit weaker than he would have liked, he lay back down.

Clover hesitated before she stepped closer to Kai and looked at him questioningly as if to ask for permission before touching him. He nodded.  She pulled the blankets back up over him.

Looking around, he asked, Where am I? Is this a hospital?

Yes. We are in a town that used to be called Butte, Montana. We came here from the east coast, she said as she sat back down. Relief flooded through her as the stress of the last few days finally seemed to be catching up to her.

How long have I been here? How long have I been asleep? Kai asked, already starting to feel tired again.

Clover started to brush his hair with her hand across his forehead. We have been here for just over a week. You have been sleeping the whole time.

Kai wanted to ask her more, but his eyelids grew too heavy for him to keep them open any longer. He soon dropped off to sleep. This time he fell into a deep, restful sleep.

    Chapter 2 Clover

Clover stood up and walked over to the window where Freya was standing, just out of sight of the bed.  Freya spoke softly to Clover. Why doesn’t he remember? Is he damaged?

Freya was a dragon and couldn’t speak out loud, but could talk to others telepathically. Even though she was too big to fit in the room, she still watched over Kai from outside his window. Clover had sat up with him since they had arrived a little over a week ago. She had slept a bit here and there, but never for very long.

The doctor said that he may have some temporary damage or memory loss due to the two viruses’ fighting in his system. Clover hugged herself as she looked at Kai as he lay sleeping. Thankfully though, the last blood test they ran show that the zombie virus was gone. The doctor doesn’t know how long the memory loss will last. He warned that we mustn’t overwhelm him, though. Let the memories come on their own.

Freya closed her eyes and breathed a thankful sigh.

Clover, you need rest. Why don’t you get some sleep? You won’t be any good to anyone if you are exhausted. I can stay here and watch over him, the dragon said with concern showing in her eyes.

Clover nodded silently and walked towards the door. She paused when she reached for the handle, looking back at Kai who was sleeping soundly.

He will learn the rest soon enough, she said as she walked down the hallway to a room where she could lay down and rest. She closed the door softly behind her and stretched out on the bed, feeling as if she hadn’t slept in weeks. She felt every muscle in her body start to relax as she closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.

The next morning when the sun rose again, Clover was back with Kai feeling very refreshed after a good night’s rest and shower. Freya looked in the window, watching Kai as he stretched and yawned, trying to work some of the stiffness out of his body. He felt much better, but still couldn’t remember much of anything. It seemed as if he were trying to remember a picture he might have seen when he was a small child. He just couldn’t remember specifics of anything.

The doctor will be in around noon to check you over to see how you are coming along. How are you feeling? Clover asked

Actually I feel pretty good. I feel much better than I did yesterday. That sleep must have done wonders for me! I still don’t remember anything.

Later that afternoon, the doctor released Kai with strict instructions to take it easy and let the memories come naturally. The doctor warned Kai that if he tried to force them, he could do more harm than good. Although Kai tried to remember something of his life, he kept drawing a blank.

With the heavy bandages removed from his leg, he found it easier to get around the room. He discovered clothes and some items in a closet behind the door, slipped on the clothes, and looked at the sword curiously. It was in a leather sheath with a belt or strap around it. He wasn’t sure where to put it or how to wear it. Kai tried to belt it around his waist and found the belt to be too narrow and too big. Taking it from around his waist, he held up the looped sling. He studied it for a minute trying to figure out just how it fit. Slowly he slipped his arm and head through the loop with the sword resting against his back.
