    Chapter 1 Kai

The sun shone down on the two sleeping forms in the small glade. Though the morning air was crisp it did not yet have the bite of winter that was surely soon to come. The young woman lay curled up to the young man’s back with her arm resting over his waist; their fingers intertwined as they slept.

The aroma of breakfast floating on the morning breeze woke Kai up. With heightened senses he was able to know who was cooking and what direction they could be found in. He opened his eyes and saw the hand he was holding, with a smile he gently rolled over to see Clover sleeping peacefully.  Gently he brushed a few strands of hair that had fallen over her face. Her beautiful blue eyes opened and a smile spread across her face as she looked at Kai. A touch of sadness flitted across her eyes like a small cloud racing across the sky.

Good morning they both said in unison.  Clover and Kai laughed at their own awkwardness.

How do you feel? she said with concern reflecting on her face. Do you remember everything?

Touched by her concern he pulled the hand he still held up to his lips and kissed it, breathing in her essence.

Memories replayed themselves through his mind as the smile on Kai’s face broadened. He did remember everything from the time he turned to chasing Clover through the woods. He remembered the laughter when they had run through the camp and Kai had signed the hair on his tail. Not once did he feel anger or bloodlust during the entire night. He did remember the rabbit they had chased and lost in the underbrush.

A growling stomach reminding them both of the cooking food not far away. With a smile they got up and headed back to the camp.

Gabe, who was in charge of the group, sat by the fire tending to the flames, making sure they didn’t burn breakfast. The silent stoic leader rarely spoke and when he did, people listened. Steve who had been with them since New York and Rita, who had joined them in Butte, were serving up breakfast to the others who had come on the scouting mission. Kai looked around at all the new faces. He knew some of the people but not all. Mitchell had introduced everyone before they had left but so much had happened in the last week with the attack and Boris’s death and the militia taking Freya.

This morning everyone was in a somber mood in comparison to last night where laughter and friendly chatter had flowed around the campfire as the few who were werewolves had run and chased each other around the others who sat talking.  When Kai had singed his tail in the camp fire and he had taken off away from the fire with the roar of laughter following him into the wooded area. It was pretty evident he wasn’t used to having a tail yet.

This morning though everyone was remembering the mission they were on and why. Gabe nodded his head as he saw the couple come walking out of the woods holding hands. Rita brought them a plate of food and motioned them to sit.

John sat on the edge of the group, keeping to himself. His hands shook as he guided a fork full of food to his mouth. Still reluctant to have him along, Kai looked at him wanting nothing more than to rip him apart. The stale smell of cigarettes and booze had lessened, but still clung to him...

I’m surprised the weather is holding out as long as it has. Usually this far north we are seeing snow already. I hope it holds out until after the mission is over. Rita said as she spooned up a bit more breakfast.

Steve paused and looked around at the leaves that were stubbornly hanging on the trees as the fall colors seemed to be trying to show everyone the beauty still in the world. The warm morning air stirred the grass and trees without even a hint of chill in it.  I just hope that when it does come we aren’t buried in snow, hit with storm after storm, Shaking his head as he remembered another such winter.

Soon breakfast was finished and they were packed and ready to head out again.

Later that morning everyone was again on the move headed north in search of this base camp that number twenty-three had come from. The five vehicles they rode in that carried their scouting group of thirty-five through the winding countryside that bordered the mountains west of them. They had decided not to go through Helena, Montana again for fear of ambush. This time they had decided to stay away from large cities and keep to the open areas so they could see an attack coming or a herd of zombies and avoid them.

After several hours on the road Clover said to no one in particular, You know, I have noticed something, when we went down south to see Joe and get Kai’s necklace and even now on our way north, we haven’t seen the large groups of zombies like we used to see. From up in the air on Odin I could see for miles and miles. We would see smaller groups of maybe twenty at the most but the large ones seem to have all disappeared. I wonder why that is. She turned from staring out the window to look at Kai who sat silently behind the wheel.

I don’t know but it makes me nervous to wonder where they are. They are either gathering somewhere or they are dying off. That’s our two options.  Personally I am hoping for the later. He said as he guided the vehicle around another car abandoned on the road.

I didn’t think those things ever died? You mean they might actually have an expiration date? Steve asked in with a half laugh.

I don’t know, so far we haven’t come across any mass of dead zombies, so it’s hard to say. Kai said looking at Clover.

Problem is most of them are the color of dirt and the ground. So even if we were looking at them how do we know they are not just mounds of dirt.  The only way we would see them is if we stumbled across them, literally. Kai said.

I just don’t get where they went. I hope that they aren’t massing somewhere because that would be really bad. Steve said with a somber look on his face, looking out the window as the scenery flashed by.

Well, until we find either a mass of dead zombies or run into a very large herd of them I say we take it one problem at a time and deal with the issue at hand. Clover said from the front seat ending the conversation.

    Chapter 2 Clover

Clover sat in the front of the vehicle watching the scenery of the changing colors of the landscape as it slowly slid by the window. Images of her and Kai running through the forest in her thoughts, his turning last night had been his first full turn. Not sure what would happen she made sure she was there to protect the others if necessary. The darkness of the forest covered her in deep shadows as she watched him change. The cool dampness of the soft loamy earth cooled her paws as she stood there silently waiting. The soft night breeze softly ruffled her fur, bringing Kia’s scent to her. The stubborn leaves clung to the limbs of the trees, refusing to be dislodged by the soft breeze.

There was no pain on his face only joy and excitement as he was finally able to allow the full transformation to take place. As he stood there on shaking legs so soon after his change the white mask covering the lower part of his face with the dark covering most of the rest of him, gave him the look of a gray wolf. Clover had slipped up to him. Searching his eyes for anger, rage, fear or lust, thankfully she found none there, only curiosity.

Still unsure of how his change would affect everyone she led him off into the woods to chase rabbits and small birds. Watching Kai try to catch his first rabbit left her sides aching from laughter. Soon she saw the gray coat of Steve and waited, holding her breath, to see how Kai would react. Cautiously Steve stepped toward the larger, heavier wolf, with ears up and tail level and wagging ever so slowly as if unsure. Kai cocked his head off to the side curiously before stretching out his nose to catch the scent of the new wolf.

Kai’s tail wagged as he lifted his front paw playfully towards Steve. Clover, Steve and Kai were soon running back through the forest towards their camp. It was now or never. Clover knew
