A ketogenic diet is a diet rich in fat, which contains adequate proteins and low carbohydrates. It is primarily used to treat epilepsy conditions in children. But now-a-days, ketogenic diets are followed widely to burn fat and to shed weight quickly.
Normally, the carbohydrates contained in food are converted to glucose which is then transported throughout the body. But consuming a ketogenic diet leaves a little carbohydrate to be converted, so to make up for it, the liver converts the fats into fatty acids and other ketone bodies. This process is called ketosis, and hence the name- ketogenic diet. These ketone bodies are then utilized as an energy source.
