Most of you would agree that the Russian language is certainly not the easiest language to learn. It was not the easiest for me either. However, it was certainly the most beautiful language, and it opened a whole lot of horizons in my life. Most importantly, it helped me to completely change my approach to language learning—I applied science to it, I explored how the human memory works, and I avoided obstacles like boredom and procrastination.
This book is a complete comprehensive guide that will take you step by step on how to learn Russian with effective techniques and free Internet resources.
The techniques engage all of your senses and stimulate your memory. They aim to make your learning experience better, more effective, and, ultimately, more fun.
The list of Internet resources and educational material is handpicked through a ton of resources that are available out there. Here, you will not get bombarded with an infinite list of resources that promise to teach you Russian.
Most importantly, the approach of this book is holistic. The techniques are universal and can be applied not only to Russian but also to any other language or subject. Learning Russian should be much more than just learning a language. This book will teach you how learning Russian can change the way you learn in general. It will reveal the secrets of effective memorization, make you love making mistakes, and turn you into a more social and adventurous language learner. I want to reveal a better YOU through the process of learning Russian.
To get an idea of what the book will be about, please watch my YouTube presentation at the University of Oxford (search for "Learn Russian with effective techniques - Talk at Oxford University").
In greater detail, this is what you get inside:

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Focuses on learning techniques without providing much information on the Russian language, does not even introduces the Russian alphabet. Examples based on Russian words, unreadable to the novice. The techniques themselves are just common sense.
Does provide some useful links as a start up to someone not planning to pay for Russian lessons. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It’s a simple book, but full of useful tips. It’s short, worth reading.
Book preview
Learn Russian Diversified - Angelos Georgakis
Preface to the 2nd Edition
St. Petersburg, 26 of March 2018
It’s been more than three years since the first edition of this book came out. I’d never expect the love and warmth that readers have shown to Learn Russian Diversified. A few months after I published the first edition, I created explorerussian.com where I started documenting my travelling experiences in both Ukraine and Russia.
I’ve learned so much during the last three years. I’ve got closer to the Russian people, life, culture, and of course, the Russian language with which I fell even more deeply in love. You did embrace my Explore Russian project. What kept me going was your encouragement, your "Привет! Меня зовут...'' messages, your ideas, your questions, your feedback. You guys, you guys... are just amazing.
In 2017 I moved permanently to St. Petersburg and I decided to stay! I went out to the streets, filming more videos, talking to strangers on the streets, listening to beautifully educated elderly people sharing with me the history and nuances of the Russian language.
In St. Petersburg, I have the honour to be invited to the best public and private language schools where I meet the elite of Russian linguists and teachers. This city is indeed the cultural capital of Russia.
In this Second Edition, I’ve added a set of simple and essential vocabulary. A friend of mine from London inspired me to include a few short survival dialogues for someone who is traveling to Moscow tomorrow, ie. what are the most important words and phrases that someone can learn quickly in the evening before the trip to Russia?
In addition, you’ll get my Russian Cases course here – Learn the Russian Cases through the most loved Russian film, the Irony of Fate. This is a video course available on my website explorerussian.com but I also decided to include this as part of the Second Edition.
Over the last three years I’ve created lots of material for the Russian learners and I’ll try to be updating this book regularly. I’m looking forward to providing more and more value to you.
If you have any question, please feel free to send me an email to angelos@explorerussian.com
Happy Reading and if you come to St. Petersburg let me know!
Kindness and smiles,
Angelos Georgakis
Introduction
This book is packed with effective learning methods on how to learn Russian. Most of these methods go further than conventional academic learning and aim to make your experience more enjoyable and as effortless as possible. These methods are universal and can be applied to any other language or subject.
What is your love for the Russian language?
From my experience, I have found that the single most important element if someone wishes to learn Russian, or indeed any other language, is love. Do you become filled with joy when you listen to Russian? Do you want to listen to more Russian, even if you don’t understand a single word? Do you admire someone who speaks Russian? Do you listen to a Russian song and start dreaming? If your answer is yes
to the previous questions, you will certainly learn Russian well. If you don’t know much about the language yet, I encourage you to find your own passion for it.
There are different ways in which someone can fall in love with the Russian language. For example, there are people who would love to read Dostoyevsky in the original language. Others are attracted by Russia’s history and influence in world politics. In my case, I was fascinated when I first saw the Cyrillic alphabet, and its unusual typewritten letters. Soon after, a Red Army Choir CD fell into my hands introducing me to beautiful classics like Moscow Nights
and Katyusha.
As a mathematician, I came across the works and life of Andrey Kolmogorov and other renowned Russian mathematicians that made me want to learn their language and understand their written work.
After I started learning the language, I fell even more in love with it. I loved the Soviet films with people rushing to work on a tram on a white winter’s day in Moscow. I loved the innocent Russian cartoons with their didactic meanings. I enjoyed the Russian hospitality as a Couchsurfer
(see link at the end of the book). I appreciated the value of friendship in the Russian culture in which both sides needed to lift some heavy blocks of stone to build its strong foundations and make it a true friendship for life. I loved reading Russian poems until late at night with my Russian friends in Moscow.
For each one of us, the starting point and way of immersion are different. It is very important that you find your own love and genuine interest for the language, as this will increase your motivation and help you overcome any obstacles throughout the learning process.
How can I learn Russian?
I strongly believe that anyone can learn Russian on their own with almost no budget. Nowadays, there is so much free educational material available on the Internet that anyone can learn anything without spending any money on private tuition. All you need is motivation and love for what you want to learn.
At the same time, however, the abundance of information on the Internet can be overwhelming and confusing. The challenge is to find a good source of information and focus. For this reason, in the Resources section of this book, you will not find an infinite list of sites to visit. Instead, you will find a limited list of resources that stand out because they are concise and straightforward for self-learning. All these resources (websites, YouTube videos, films) are completely free. The only exception is an excellent old book, The Penguin Russian Course: A Complete Course for Beginners (see link at the end of the book), that you can get for less than $4 (including the shipping cost) wherever you are in the world. Finally, if you have some more money to spend, I would suggest some italki private lessons.
How long will it take me to learn Russian?
On the subject of how long it will take to learn Russian, I quite often come across books and websites that promise people fluency in a language in 24 hours, 7 days, or 1 month. Time is an important factor in everything we do, and I appreciate someone’s goal to learn a language very quickly. I also wanted to speak Russian quickly, and I managed to achieve good conversational Russian within three months of immersion in the language, surprising all my Russian friends. However, I never became obsessed with a specific time frame. I never said to myself, You have only three months to speak Russian. If you don’t speak fluently by the end of the ninetieth day, you will have failed.
Instead, I learned Russian quickly because I fell in love with the language and the culture. The quick progress was not a result of a race with myself but an inevitable outcome of the immersion into something that I found absolutely beautiful.
In our times, life has become something of a race. Everyone talks about time management, optimal productivity, and getting things done.
As a
