Simply put, the ketogenic diet places the focus on consuming fats as the primary source of calories instead of carbohydrates or proteins. While this premise flies in the face of conventional knowledge, even a cursory study of the dietary history of mankind provides strong evidence for this. For instance, researchers have found that people have a string affinity for energy-dense (i.e. high fat) foods and can determine the energy content of such food very quickly. They note that the higher level brain functions which humans have developed require a lot of calories, thus energy-dense foods are more attractive to people. Foods which are high in fats are energy dense as they offer 9 calories per gram versus carbohydrates and proteins
