    Coaching

Coaching is a process which aims to develop various aspects of an individual. Coaching can be used on a one-to-one basis, with a team, or a whole department. You can use coaching as a sit down exercise where you perhaps take an hour to deliver a coaching session, or you can use coaching questions in daily working life to continually develop your team. The person providing the coaching is referred to as the ‘Coach’ and the person receiving the coaching is the ‘Coachee’.

The Difference Between Mentoring and Coaching

In order to fully understand the purpose of coaching, it is useful to compare it to mentoring. The mentoring process involves transferring the mentor’s knowledge and expertise to another individual. The mentor provides detailed and specific instructions for the task. Many organisations use mentoring as a way to train their employees and also to keep knowledge within the company. Mentoring can lead to coaching.

A coach does not have to be an expert on the subject, whereas a mentor does. The coach uses a variety of methods such as asking specific timed questions. They aim to provide the individual with a greater awareness of their approach to the situation, assisting them to develop of their own solutions.

The key principles of coaching include:

    - Working collaboratively with the coachee

    - Focusing on helping the coachee to achieve their coaching goals.

    - Ensuring the focus remains solely on the coachee’s thoughts and experiences.

    - Encouraging the coachee to make changes by raising their awareness of their thought patterns and behaviours.
