    Soul Psalms - U-Meleni Mhlaba-Adebo

    SECTION 1

    Truth

    Papa Don’t Know Me!

I was birthed in stagnant watersn

    The air was thick

    Pregnant

I couldn’t feel the passionate wetness of my limbs

    Forming in my mother’s mind

    Sublime

She tried to hide me from the pain of paternal

    indifference

Like a nightmare I came to my father in his sleep

    Haunting his dreams

    Quiet suicidal thoughts of fear

    Papa don’t know me

    Biological papa, Baba

    Papa don’t know me NO

    Papa was a rolling stone

He said I was TOO black

    TOO radical

    TOO strong

Why couldn’t I be good like the other Joes and Janes

God knows when and where he lost his pride

I am not about to hide what I feel deep inside

Cause I am BLACK and I am PROUD

And dammit I am going to shout it loud

He wanted his children growing up with color

    not being an issue

    Unfortunately color is an issue

And you have to teach your children

    who they really are

So they will not get lost like leaves in the wind

My mother, my wisdom, my earth taught me who I am

    I stand tall and proud

    To be AFRICAN

Mama’s love gave me wings so I can fly high

Papa’s eyes open wide but he’s so damn blind

Can’t understand the woman I am

    The woman that can

    Papa don’t know me

    Biological papa, Baba

    Papa don’t know me NO

    Papa was a rolling stone

Love Is Not Supposed to Hurt

Sometimes I wish I could punch out your eyes

    like orbits

See how far you would go once blind

You who gave me love have blinded
