Chapter 1, Applications

If you are following a health plan, you often want to sleep better, eat healthily and do more exercise. Also, you want to keep your house clean. The health plan you have might be under the headings, diet, exercise, hygiene and sleep. And you want to use your computer and the tools it offers to research online and to write a daily healthy living plan for you to keep to and benefit from. On your computer, you have programs, such as spreadsheets and word processors. In either, you can have headings, categories, lists, notes and numerical figures. You have formatting tools and editing tools, you can do calculations and you can print. Or you can make other changes, such as increasing 'data entry' or typing speed. And you can organize and change your files so they are easier to use and have a better look and feel.

The basic criteria for having a spreadsheet or WP file are that it is useful to you and you continue to find it useful to you. When it is no longer useful to you, you are demotivated to keep it and there is no good reason to keep it as well. You can change the data you record. And you can change the program as well. The usefulness of the information you get has to balance out against the time and effort to record data, to do data entry and the time and effort to preview information and reports.

Some things about computers can at least sound very technical because they use a lot of hard-to-understand jargon. Yet almost every word you read today, the writer researched online, typed up on a WP, number crunched on a spreadsheet and stored on a computer. You can also write other things using a WP such as a list of places to go on holiday.

To make decisions in your personal life, you need 'information'. 'Information' is just something that you want to know, such as how many times on average each week you've been to the gym. To get this information, you must have recorded when you went to the gym, such as in a diary. And then so the computer calculates the average number per week, you must have 'data entered' some data, which simply means that you have typed something on your computer such as the dates of your gym visits. 'Data' that you data enter is such as, for this example and as we have already said before now, when you went to the gym. Or it could be as well the exercises you did and the number of sets or reps. Data is a small bit of information, such as a date or a figure. You want to do something with this data such as seeing a total or an average. This is because only then can you see trends, progress or causes and effects. You want to see how much fitter or stronger you are getting doing what exercises. Or you can see whether you are doing regular exercise when this is a goal in itself. And because you want to know something like an average over time, you use a computer program such as a spreadsheet that does numerical calculations.

A spreadsheet is the generic name for software that can do number calculations or that can keep lists, such as Microsoft's Excel or
