Finger Style guitar has always been a melting pot of many different styles and influences. It is hard to pin it down to one ingredient that is unique to American or British finger style. However when you begin to stir the pot, the ingredients begin to separate, and without being too patriotic you could say there really is a thing called ‘Great British Finger Style’. In this course we’ll be exploring the influences, styles and techniques that make up the quintessential Great British Finger Style. Styles include Classical, Spanish, Folk, American Roots and Blues. Exercises and 12 study tunes all supported by video.

Rick Payne is an established acoustic blues guitarist with many national and international tours to his credit. He has become especially well known for his authentic acoustic blues finger picking, in the many traditional styles of the blues including delta blues, piedmont, ragtime and slide and has recorded several albums of this kind.Often compared with Ry Cooder, slide guitar maestro Rick Payne’s performances have taken him to prime time TV, to festivals and theatres throughout the UK and on tour to Europe, USA, Scandinavia and Greek Islands. He has provided music to a number of major TV productions, for programmes on Radio 4 and the BBC World Service. CLASSICAL ROOTS
In the late 50's and early 60's there was a boom in the popularity of classical guitar especially in London. This was due to the emergence of dynamic young players like John Williams and Julian Bream - it became fashionable to go to guitar concerts and take up lessons in classical guitar. Teaching manuals and methods were updated by the great Andres Segovia and made learning more accessible. The Spanish Guitar Centre in London became the focal point of studying the exercises and repetoires of 19th century classical guitar composers like Fernando Sor, Matteo Carcassi and Mauro Giuliani. Although the craze of Skiffle and Trad Jazz had taken hold in the UK, a new breed began to surface in the form of the 'British Fingerstyle Player'. Students fresh from their classical guitar studies took their places on the British music scene. Players like Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Martin Carthy, Jimi Page, Richard Thompson, Davy Graham to name but a few, admit to having worked through the rigours of classical guitar training. I remember my first attempts at
