About this ebook

Fawn Brodie's biography of the founding Mormon prophet has received both praise and condemnation since it's publication in 1945. In 1995, at a symposium to mark its fiftieth anniversary, several scholars gathered together to re-examine Brodie, her Joseph Smith biography and its continuing importance. Bringhurst has brought together many of the essays from that meeting.

Useful for given recent scholarly views, both LDs and non-LDS, of Brodie's book. As a non-LDS scholar, I notethat even the LDS contributors (though criticizing and correcting Brodie on some matters), do accept some facts I personally consider discreditable to Smith, notably his practice of plural marriage. (Though some, but not all, of those marriages were nominal or posthumous)
