Winged Pair - J.D. Stonebridge
Chapter One
The tapping of his fingers against the keys of his laptop had been the melody that filled his home. Since his return, he had been huddled over research after research, seeking for answers that eluded him.
Tony had a journal with him, filled with footnotes of Prof. Black's research about the mysterious creatures he named as the Primes—the research he found in the cabin where he last saw his girlfriend, Lauren. Scouring the internet gave him no progress, much to his disappointment. He'd been studying Archeology and Ancient History since he could remember, with no recollection of having passed the topic of such beings. It had him questioning how Lauren's father achieved such information.
And what was Chryssa talking about? Yet another mystery Tony wanted to uncover. Unfortunately for him, he had no way of contacting the woman whom they met a few days ago who seemed to be connected to the mysterious beings Prof. Black called the Primes, nor the good professor himself; the latter, sadly, had been missing for longer than Lauren had and was presumed to be dead.
A knock on the door jolted Tony out of his thoughts. He walked to answer, curious as to whom his visitor might be. He had been absent from classes since Lauren’s disappearance, and as much as it was nice, he disliked the idea that his classmates would check up on him.
When he opened the door, however, the face that greeted him was a less expected one.
Hey,
Lance, Lauren’s brother, gave him a huff.
Tony eyed the man curiously, What are you doing here?
Lance scoffed. Can you at least let me in first? You’re just gonna make me stand here?
he said, shouldering his way in.
Tony, having no choice but to step aside, scratched his head in confusion. He shut the door behind Lance, but before he could say anything, Lance turned to him and added, I thought the stereotype of messy college boy rooms was just a myth.
He eyed the study table at the back of Tony’s couch where the only spot that didn’t have a clutter of paper was where the laptop and coffee mug were. A small trash bin sat below the table, filled to the brim with papers, empty bags of chips, and discarded cup noodles.
I’ve been researching. So sue me.
Tony groaned. He marched up to his desk in his meager attempt to tidy up while Lance sat on the couch, throwing his arms up on the back. Tony rolled his eyes. Are you ever gonna tell me what you’re doing here?
Lance let out a sigh. He jumped back on his feet and faced Tony. Look, first things first. I’ve pulled all the strings I got to get Lauren back, and so far, none of them have given me any results, whatsoever. Bottom line: I’m getting desperate. And after that whole thing with Chryssa, I...
he hesitated. "I should know more about
