Four Paths Crossed - J.D. Stonebridge
Chapter One
Lauren was caught on video! Tony thought, Our first concrete clue! He then hurriedly pushed Lance away from the laptop and took his place. He downloaded the video to his laptop and opened it using his own set of media players. Lance pouted at the sight, What’s with all the crap? Just play the video again.
Nuh-uh,
Tony chided, just give me a few seconds.
A few seconds passed. Here, it should look better.
And it did look better. Lance took Tony’s laptop and viewed the enhanced video. Instead of a static-filled video that looked like it was shot from an old camera phone, Lance could now make out proper details, and even noticed how smooth the video’s animation played. Smooth,
he commented.
Running in sixty frames per second,
Tony boasted, I'm surprised nobody knows about the applications to enhance videos like these.
Lance wasn’t paying attention. This time, he could see the video for what it was and he observed every detail.
It started with Lauren stepping into the convenience store and stopping to look around. She stopped for a millisecond when she spotted the CCTV camera and frowned before looking away. Lance was certain it was Lauren.
The footage continued on with Lauren approaching one of the aisles. She seemed to inspect the card sections. She took out one card from the right part and looked at it for some time. Then, she placed it back and went around towards the cooled drinks section. She stared at the soda section, opened the door and took out a neon green bottle. She did the same on the sports drink section, and took out a blue bottle.
Lauren approached the counter. A clerk greeted her with a smile and based on how their mouths moved, seemed to have a short talk before Lauren grabbed her wallet and paid in cash. She gave a little goodbye wave and sauntered out of the store.
Lance heaved and exhaled. She’s alright,
he breathed. He clicked on the video to play it again, Hey, help me out here,
he muttered to Tony.
What?
Lance opened the email, This was taken at a convenience store in West Des Moines, Iowa, around four days ago. Just like what Grace told us...
He played the video again, What can you tell me about Lauren?
Tony squinted, Is this some kind of trick question? I mean, do you know the answer already?
Lance’s brow furrowed, I need your perspective, what can you tell me?
Ah,
Tony breathed, she’s wearing a brown jacket, looks like it has warm lining. Probably staying somewhere cold? Maybe the thing inside her doesn’t like the cold much?
Or maybe,
Lance firmly suggested, she was somewhere up north, where it was cold.
You mean, she was somewhere cold, like somewhere up north, then went down to Des Moines in an instant.
Yeah,
Lance nodded, as he chewed absently on his thumbnail.
And here I thought I was the supernatural guy, but you believe she could teleport?
Tony brightened.
The ex-soldier sighed and rolled his eyes. What I meant was she flew.
You think she could fly?
"AIRPLANE," Lance stressed through his gritted teeth.
R-right!
Tony nervously chuckled. Yeah, there’s an airport in Des Moines, she must have traveled to the more rural areas,
Tony continued.
Why Des Moines? Why did she travel westward?
Lance demanded. All we know is that she was there, and she was acting like her usual self.
Tony cleared his throat. He tried to shake the heavy feeling from the pits of his stomach. He watched Lauren at the camera, and almost thought she was looking directly at him. Then she sneered, and went on her way. Lauren, Tony muttered in his nostalgia-flooded thoughts, why did it have to be you, of all people?
Tony blinked a few times, clearing his thoughts and trying to fight the pooled tears from falling. Look at the clerk,
he said and pointed at the screen. Do you find anything odd there?
Lance replayed it a few seconds, on the part where Lauren approached the counter and watched it, Nope, it just looks like they had a chat.
Tony had just enough time to wipe his eyes, "Ah, I thought it meant they knew each
