    Chapter One

I know something’s wrong, I can feel it in my heart.

Beverley Slade paced nervously around the room, her heels making indents on the plush beige carpeting in the living room. She checked her shiny gold watch repeatedly, and it was now 11:00PM. Her husband Maxwell never came home this late, and for him not to ring letting her know where he was, something was not quite right. Beverley stopped, and stood on the spot. She turned and saw a photo of Maxwell on the cabinet, wearing his exercise clothes, with his big smile, twinkling light brown eyes, and happy disposition. She shook her head, and sighed.

Maxwell, where are you? Beverley’s thoughts were interrupted by the chime of her doorbell, which jogged her. She raced towards the door, gripping the handle, and opened it rapidly. Beverley was surprised to witness who was at her front entrance, and believed she was seeing things.

Good evening, is this the home of Maxwell and Beverley Slade? a tall man said, watching Beverley with neutrality.

Yes, I’m Beverley Slade, how can I help you?

Here’s my identification, the policeman said with authority as he showed his badge, as the other policeman did the same.

Beverley’s eyes widened in surprise, and her heart began to thump.

What is it, is something the matter? Beverley said, looking pained.

Detective David Evans pressed his lips together, and closed his eyes for a moment.

It’s better that we talk inside, Mrs Slade, he said, as Beverley nodded, clearing the way for them to enter. Beverley led them to the large armchairs, and she sat opposite the officers on the sofa.

Can you tell me what I can do for you? Beverley said.

The policemen looked at each other for a few seconds, and David turned to Beverley.

Mrs Slade, I’m sorry to inform you that your husband’s missing.

    Beverley’s eyes widened in horror.

    What!

His car was found abandoned by the side of the road about half an hour ago by a passerby, David said firmly.

Oh my god! Beverley wailed, clutching the sides of her face with her hands.

David sighed, and shook his head, uneasy with what he had to impart to her.

There were no signs of a struggle, and Mr Slade’s personal contents, such as his wallet and cell phone, were not tampered with.

Beverley sat back into the sofa, eyes wild with confusion.

Do you…do you believe he’s still alive? Beverley asked, her mouth becoming dry, as the policeman pursed his lips.

It’s still too early to say, but, I have a couple of questions to ask you that might help us, David said.

Beverley tilted her head towards David, and squinted her eyes.

What would you like to know?

The other policeman took out a thick notepad from his pocket, the paper rustling as he did this, and poised himself to write. David raised his eyebrows, Beverley’s eyes upon him.

Does your husband have any known enemies, someone who would want to do this to him?

Beverley pondered this question for a moment, closing her eyes, as the policemen watched her. She then opened her eyes, and faced them.

No, no one I can think of. Why?

David sighed, and adjusted the top button of his cream-colored gabardine coat.

To me, this seems like a premeditated kidnapping - there’s nothing random about it at all, David said, creases popping up in his forehead.

What do you mean? Beverley said, tipping her head to the left.

The policeman exhaled softly, and nodded.

It wasn’t a simple robbery for money or other items as these were not taken, David said, narrowing his eyes in thought. There’s something more to this which isn’t evident to us at this time. Upon hearing this, Beverley began to cry, putting her head in her hands.

Oh Maxwell, why did this happen to you? We had such a beautiful marriage, I can’t understand it, I just can’t, Beverley screeched, as David Evans walked over to her, and patted her on the shoulder.

"Mrs Slade, is there anyone you’d like to come over for
