I loved how this bible was organized. Every word of the bible placed in chronological order makes putting God's amazing story into historical context a very accessible thing. There seems to be many one-year chronological bibles, but the organization of their timelines seems to be a little looser. For example, a Tyndale version begins with Genesis 1:1-5:32. This version begins with John 1:1-2, Psalm 90:2, Genesis 1:1, Isaiah 14:12-18, and then picks back up at Genesis 1:2. It not only feels very researched and deliberate, but really shows a beautiful picture of what the bible is.The story of David, switching from Samuel to Psalms as it did, was especially beautiful. Because you are reading the facts and then the song, you really get to see David's heart and what God delighted in. The historical notes included just added to the fullness of the experience. The birth of Socrates, for example, is noted. Overall, reading through this bible was a great experience and left me with a much better impression of the 'big picture'.

It lost a star due to it following the gap theory and having the fall of Satan before the completion of creation where God pronounces, "IT WAS VERY GOOD" how can He make such a statement if sin and death had already entered His creation?A chronological approach to reading through the Bible is good to see a progressive revelation of God to man, however the time line is approached in order of events, not the order of when the Scriptures were actually written. I believe that a chronological Bible should be published with the order of Scripture received but that is just my view, also for a Bible such as this I believe a suggested daily reading to read through the Bible in a year should be included as any yearly reading plan is useless when reading chronologically.A good concept but a chronologically received time line can be found on the internet which in my view would be better as that is how man actually received the Scriptures.

Eternity Past

Man in his finite being cannot comprehend the ways of an infinite God. In some areas where the Bible is silent, we will have to wait until eternity future to get many answers. Many scholars believe that Satan was cast out of heaven causing a perfect earth to become void and chaotic and thus causing havoc on some kind of pre-Adamic creation, with God then renovating the earth and preparing it for man as we know him some 6,000 years ago. Others believe Satan did not come to earth until Genesis 3 when sin entered the world.

1. The First Five Days

a. First Day (Light and Time)

GENESIS 1

² And the earth was without form, and void;2 and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

³ And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

And God called the light Day,3 and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning4 were the first day.

b. Second Day (Water and Sky)

GENESIS 1

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters,5 and let it divide the waters from the waters.6

And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

PSALM 33

By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.

c. Third Day (Land, Seas, Plant Life)

GENESIS 1

And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place,7 and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

¹⁰ And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas:8 and God saw that it was good.

¹¹ And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb9 yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

¹² And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

¹³ And the evening and the morning were the third day.

GENESIS 2

And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth,10 and there was not a man to till the ground.

But there went up a mist11 from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.

d. Fourth Day (Sun, Moon, Stars)

GENESIS 1

¹⁴ And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

¹⁵ And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth:12 and it was so.

¹⁶ And God made two great lights;13 the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night:14 he made the stars also.

¹⁷ And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

¹⁸ And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

¹⁹ And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

e. Fifth Day (Fowl and Sea Life)

GENESIS 1

²⁰ And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

²¹ And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

²² And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

²³ And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

2. Sixth Day (Land Life and Man)

a. Animals

GENESIS 1

²⁴ And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind,15 cattle,16 and creeping thing,17 and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

²⁵ And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

b. Creation of Adam (64th Gen)

18

GENESIS 1

²⁶ And God said, Let us19 make man in our image,20 after our likeness:21 and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

GENESIS 2

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

GENESIS 5

THIS is the book of the generations22 of Adam.23 In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;24

c. Garden of Eden

GENESIS 2

And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden;25 and there he put the man whom he had formed.

And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.26

Genesis 2:9

The Tree of Life

The Tree of Life would give life without death to those who ate of it. God has always intended humans to live forever.

¹⁰ And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.

¹¹ The name of the first is Pison:27 that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah,28 where there is gold;

¹² And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone.

¹³ And the name of the second river is Gihon:29 the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia.30

¹⁴ And the name of the third river is Hiddekel:31 that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria.32 And the fourth river is Euphrates.33

¹⁵ And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it34 and to keep it.

¹⁶ And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

¹⁷ But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.35 . . .

¹⁹ And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them:36 and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

²⁰ And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field;37 but for Adam there was not found an help meet38 for him.

d. Creation of Woman

GENESIS 2

¹⁸ And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. . . .

²¹ And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

²² And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman,39 and brought her unto the man.

²³ And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

²⁴ Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

²⁵ And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.40

GENESIS 3

²⁰ And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

Genesis 3:20

Eve

Eve means living, life-giver; she is the first woman named in the Bible (of 162).

e. Creation Concludes

(1) Name Given

GENESIS 1

²⁷ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.41

GENESIS 5

² Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.

(First Dispensation—Innocency)

(2) Man’s Dominion Over Creation

GENESIS 1

²⁸ And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish42 the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

²⁹ And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

³⁰ And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green43 herb for meat:44 and it was so.

(3) Creation Completed

GENESIS 1

³¹ And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

GENESIS 2

THUS the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

JOHN 1

³ All things were made by him;45 and without him was not any thing made that was made.

PSALM 19

To the chief Musician, a Psalm of David.46

THE heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

² Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.

³ There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.

Their line47 is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, ℗

Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,48 and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.

His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit49 unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

PROVERBS 8

²⁴ When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.

²⁵ Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:

²⁶ While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.

²⁷ When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass50 upon the face of the depth:

²⁸ When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:

²⁹ When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:

³⁰ Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;

³¹ Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.

(4) Seventh (Sabbath) Day Established

GENESIS 2

² And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested51 on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

³ And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

EXODUS 20

¹¹ For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day,52 and hallowed it.

B. Fall of Man and Its Consequences

1. Satan Cast Out of Heaven

4004 BC

EZEKIEL 28

¹¹ Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

¹² Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus,53 and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.

¹³ Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

¹⁴ Thou art the anointed cherub54 that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

¹⁵ Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

¹⁶ By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.

¹⁷ Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

¹⁸ Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick;55 therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.

¹⁹ All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.56

ISAIAH 14

¹² How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer,57 son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!58

¹³ For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars59 of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:60

¹⁴ I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

¹⁵ Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.61

¹⁶ They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

¹⁷ That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof;62 that opened not the house of his prisoners?

2. Temptation and Fall

GENESIS 3

NOW the serpent63 was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

² And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

³ But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it,64 lest ye die.

And the serpent65 said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof,66 and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her;67 and he did eat.68

And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.69

(Second Dispensation—Conscience—Responsible to Do All Known Good, Avoid All Known Evil)

3. Judgment and Curse

GENESIS 3

And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day:70 and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

¹⁰ And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

¹¹ And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

¹² And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

¹³ And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

¹⁴ And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat71 all the days of thy life:

¹⁵ And I will put enmity between thee72 and the woman, and between thy seed73 and her seed;74 it shall bruise thy head,75 and thou shalt bruise his heel. ℗

Genesis 3:15

Promise of Redemption

This is the first biblical promise of the Redeemer whom God would send to rescue humankind from sin and death. Satan failed to keep Christ from the cross; the death and resurrection of Jesus sealed his ultimate defeat.

¹⁶ Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

¹⁷ And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow76 shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

¹⁸ Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

¹⁹ In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.77 . . .

²¹ Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins,78 and clothed them.

4. Expulsion From Eden

4004 BC

GENESIS 3

²² And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us,79 to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

²³ Therefore the LORD God80 sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

²⁴ So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims,81 and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.82

AND it came to pass, when men began to multiply122 on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

² That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.123

2468 BC

³ And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

There were giants124 in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men125 which were of old, men of renown.

And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

And it repented126 the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. . . .

¹¹ The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.

¹² And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

GENESIS 6

But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. . . .

¹³ And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

¹⁴ Make thee an ark of gopher wood;127 rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.128

Genesis 6:14–16

Noah’s Ark

The ark was 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high; by 1900 AD, nearly every large ship was inclined toward these proportions. Noah’s ark was an oblong box intended only to float on water (there was no mast, sail, or rudder); with a potential displacement of 43,300 tons, it had a gross tonnage of 13,960 and a total capacity of 1½ million cubic feet. It had three levels and a small slot window under the roof line running the ark’s entire distance to let in light and ventilation (Ge 8:6) while an overhang kept the rain out.

¹⁵ And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.

¹⁶ A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit129 shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

¹⁷ And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth,130 to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.131

¹⁸ But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives132 with thee.

¹⁹ And of every living thing of all flesh,133 two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.

²⁰ Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.

²¹ And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.

²² Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.134

1. Entering the Ark

Noah age 600

2348 BC

GENESIS 7

AND the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.

Genesis 7:1

Come Into the Ark

God said to Noah, Come . . . into the ark, not Go, because His presence was in the ark.

² Of every clean beast2 thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.

³ Of fowls also of the air by sevens,3 the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.

For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.4

And Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him.

And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,5

There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.

2. Rain Falls

2348 BC

GENESIS 7

¹³ In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;

¹⁴ They, and every beast after his kind,6 and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort.

¹⁵ And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life.

¹⁶ And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in. . . .

¹⁰ And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth. . . .

¹⁷ And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.

¹⁸ And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.

¹⁹ And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.

²⁰ Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.7 . . .

¹¹ In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up,8 and the windows of heaven were opened.9

¹² And the rain10 was upon the earth forty days and forty nights. . . .

²¹ And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man:11

²² All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.

²³ And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth:12 and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.

3. Rain Stops

2348 BC

GENESIS 8

AND God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters assuaged;13

² The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;

4. Waters Subside

2348 BC

GENESIS 7

²⁴ And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.14

GENESIS 8

³ And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated.

And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.15

Genesis 8:3–4

Time Within the Ark

Noah’s family was in the ark 377 days (some say 371, counting from when the rain began): 7 days of waiting, 40 days raining, 110 days floating, 150 days resting while the waters receded, and 70 days drying.

5. Land Seen

2347 BC

GENESIS 8

And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen.

6. Raven, Dove, Leaf

2347 BC

GENESIS 8

And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made:

And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth.

 Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground;

But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.

¹⁰ And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark;

¹¹ And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.

¹² And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the dove; which returned not again unto him any more.

7. Noah Discovers Dry Land

Noah age 601

2347 BC

GENESIS 8

¹³ And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth: and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry.

PSALM 104

Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.

Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a garment: the waters stood above the mountains.16

At thy rebuke they fled; at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away.

They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys unto the place which thou hast founded for them.

Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over; that they turn not again to cover the earth.17

8. Leaving the Ark Upon God’s Command

2347 BC

GENESIS 8

¹⁴ And in the second month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, was the earth dried.

¹⁵ And God spake unto Noah, saying,

¹⁶ Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons’ wives with thee.

¹⁷ Bring forth with thee every living thing that is with thee, of all flesh, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth; that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply upon the earth.

¹⁸ And Noah went forth, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him:

¹⁹ Every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl, and whatsoever creepeth upon the earth, after their kinds, went forth out of the ark.

(Third Dispensation—Human Government)

9. God’s Rainbow Covenant With Noah

2347 BC

GENESIS 8

²⁰ And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.18

²¹ And the LORD smelled a sweet savour;19 and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

²² While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter,20 and day and night shall not cease.

GENESIS 9

And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying,

 And I, behold, I establish my covenant21 with you, and with your seed after you;

¹⁰ And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.

¹¹ And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.

¹² And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:

¹³ I do set my bow in the cloud,22 and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.

¹⁴ And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:

¹⁵ And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.23

¹⁶ And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.

¹⁷ And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth. . . .

¹ AND God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.

² And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.24

³ Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat25 for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things.

But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.26

And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man.

Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.27

And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.28

GENESIS 9

¹⁸ And the sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth: and Ham is the father of Canaan.29

¹⁹ These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread.30

Genesis 9:18–19

Sons of Noah and Nations of the Earth

70 nations came from and were named after 70 descendants of Noah’s sons:

Shem

Shem’s five sons and their offspring settled from the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean in Persia (Elam), Assyria (Asshur), Chaldea (Arphaxad), Asia Minor (Lud), and Syria (Aram). His descendant Joktan settled Arabia. The Semites include the Arabs and also the Jews, the people who would present and preserve knowledge of the true God for all the world’s nations. Of the 70 nations from Noah’s line, 26 come from Shem.

Ham

Ham’s four sons and their offspring settled in Ethiopia (Cush), Egypt (Mizraim, see note on Ge 10:6), Canaan (Canaan), and throughout Phoenicia/northern Africa (Phut). Thirty of the 70 Noahic nations spring from Ham.

Japheth

The seven sons of Japheth—Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, Tiras—and their offspring originally settled on the coast and in the lands of the Mediterranean Sea, in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), and around the Black and Caspian Seas. Eventually his descendants would become known, most broadly, as the nations of Europe and of Western Asia. Ancient peoples more immediately descended from Japheth included the Scythians, Greeks (Ionians), Slavs, Medes, Cimmerians, Turks, Thracians, and others. Of the original 70 Noahic nations, 14 come from Japheth.

So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.

Therefore is the name of it called Babel;75 because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

Genesis 11:9

Multiple Languages

Tradition holds that speech was then divided into 70 different languages. Today there are approximately 6,800 languages spoken in the world.
