Sara
Sara held the phone in her hand, hearing but not believing the words coming over the airways. Her mind whirled nonstop as tears leaked out and slid down her cheeks. Absentmindedly, she grabbed the closest clothes to her which happened to be the work clothes from that day discarded haphazardly on the floor. The Bible, open to the book of Ruth on the nightstand, beckoned to her and she grabbed it and her purse on the way out the door. The cool night air brushed her face and stars lit the path to her car.
The emergency room was quiet, disturbed only by the automatic opening doors. She inquired about them and was directed to the intensive care waiting room by an uninterested admission employee.
Entering, she saw her ex-mother-in-law. Evilness permeated from her glaring eyes and scorched her soul as it had for the past ten years. Sara fought to keep the rage boiling up in her confined. Too many bad memories of years past wanted to surface. God is bigger than this, she reminded herself.
Sweat pooled on her forehead, her heart raced, her stomach churned and she felt lightheaded. Without a word she turned and walked down the hall until she found a window to lean her head against. The cold pane brought a moment of relief.
Feeling better, she turned and with purpose went to ask the nurse if she could speak to the doctor. With a knowing look and comforting hand placed on her arm the nurse replied, He is with your son in surgery. I promise as soon as we hear something, you will be the first to know.
I nodded and choked, What happened?
The nurse whispered, Your ex-husband lost control of the Jeep.
She paused then continued, He was under the influence of alcohol.
The nurse looked past Sara and at the touch of a hand upon her shoulder, Sara jumped and spun around.
Her ex-mother-in-law stood before her. Resentment and anger boiled to the surface again and she concentrated on her breathing to fight it back. Frozen was what she became at the touch of the woman. With effort Sara’s face became void of emotion and she was taken back when the woman tried to hug her.
Of all the people in the world to offer comfort, who was she to come to me? Sara thought.
It was difficult and she closed her eyes. But then she felt the pressure of the Bible that was in her purse and pressed against her side. She remembered Ruth and Naomi and quickly pushed the story out of her mind.
Sara wanted to lash out at that woman who had hurt not only her, but her sons on a consistent basis. Instead, Sara tried to find the love that God had for her and prayed for not only strength, but courage to give grace to the evil woman.
