    I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

      CHAPTER ONE

      Ian’s Gang Base.

      Thank you. Thank you very much, Robert Stevens put the telephone down and let out a huge sigh. He could barely believe it, but there it was. It was done. After all this time, it was done.

      Robert left the office and headed down to the lounge where, predictably, the rest of the gang were. Philip and Steve were playing cards, Banix was calculating the scientific possibility of creating a super nova in the downstairs toilet, while Matthew was staring in disgust at the couch where, on one side Dean and Charlotte were passionately making out while on the other side, Ian and Cody were also making out, possibly even more passionately. Robert cleared his throat.

      Everyone ignored him.

      Robert coughed loudly.

      Matthew tossed him some lozenges dismissively.

      I, er, Robert started, not quite sure how he should say this. I have some news.

      Ian and Cody and Dean and Charlotte finally broke apart, looking at him expectantly.

      Finally! Matthew said disgustedly. Those four were making me sick.

      I thought he was looking a bit green, Charlotte noted.

      Yeah but that was the envy, Dean quipped.

      Ian looked at Robert in irritation. Well? Get on with it.

      Yeah, Cody smirked. We’ve got important business to get back to here, you know!

      Ian looked at her adoringly. We certainly do.

      Matthew feigned gagging.

      I just got off the phone, Robert said.

      Robert, really, Matthew pulled a face. We don’t really want to know.

      Yeah, can’t the phone get itself off? Philip wanted to know.

      The majority of world leaders here on Earth have finally signed the Spiridon Accord, Robert told them. A few Arab countries have refused, but no one really cares about them.

      Is there a point to this boring conversation? Steve demanded.

      You could say so, Robert said exasperatedly. Next week, the countries will all put forth one candidate. The following week a vote will be taken, and then the very first President of Earth will be announced.

      Ian sat up sharply. But that means-

      Exactly, Robert nodded. Once Earth has established a Presidency, entrance into the Universal Structure will be swift and sure.

      How long? Matthew asked soberly.

      Within two months, Robert told them.
