Chapter 1: Getting the Right Tools

Before you can get going with your vegetable garden, you need to get ahold of the right tools. These tools will make a big difference in how well your garden is going to grow and flourish for you. When you are ready to get started on gardening, make sure that you get some of these important tools to make the whole process easier.

    The Right Gardening Tools

    Spade

The spade is one of the first tools that you will need for starting your garden. These are shovels with a square head with a short handle. These are good at getting the sod out of the way, edging beds, and planting holes. You can also remove some of the soil that is in the way. You should look for one that has a steel head and a wood or fiberglass handle so it can help you to work for a long time. Invest a bit more in this spade since the weak ones will break in just a few uses, compared to a good one that will last for a long time.

    Hand Trowel

While the spade is going to be good for helping you to move a lot of dirt around, but the hand trowel can be nice for those smaller jobs. This including mixing up potting soil, digging out the weeds, planting the container gardens, and planting some of the smaller vegetables and herbs If you are able to afford it, look for one that has stainless steel in the top to make it more durable and a rubberized grip can be nice for some comfort. Stainless steel works well too, but make sure that it is strongly connected so the trowel won’t fall apart.

    Digging Fork

These are good when you need to deal with a lot of difficult soil. For example, if you need to loosen up some soil that is compacted together or dividing perennials, you will find that the digging form is a good thing to use. You should pick out one that has four tins that are square and foot rests that allow for a more comfortable digging experience. Don’t go for a pitchfork though; these work well for some things, but they are not going to be that good when you want to get down and dirty with some of the work. A D-shaped handle is good for comfort and for getting all the leverage that you need when you are digging.

    Hoe

There are a variety of hoes that you can use and they all have different purposes that you can try. You can go with a super thin model if your plants are close together and you need to get into this small area. You can also go for some that are standard or more action packed to help out. Vegetable gardens usually go best with a stirrup or standard how in order to get between the different rows of vegetables that you have. Perennial gardens on the other hand will enjoy a touch that is a bit more delicate.

    Rake

A rake is a good option to use. You can use it to not only help to clean out the leaves that come into your yard during the autumn, but they work well for cleaning out your garden beds when spring comes along. There are a lot of things that can get into the garden bed through the winter, and you will find that using a rake is going to save a lot of time cleaning up the yard. Plastic rakes will often work the best for your vegetable garden, as long as you are careful and pick one that is sturdy enough to take the work.

    Pruners

No matter what kind of garden you are growing, pruners can make a big difference in your garden. These are good for helping to keep the garden cleaned up through the season. If you have a part of the plant that is falling apart or not growing how it should, you can use the pruners to take off this dead part before it ruins the rest of the plant. If the plant is starting to grow too much or overtaking more area than it should, make sure that you use the pruners to cut this issue back as well. This helps to keep the garden in check so you can enjoy the beauty and the tasty goodness that comes with a healthy garden.

    Tiller

If you are really going to town and think that you will need it for a long amount of time, go ahead and purchase this. If you just plan to use it once a year to get the garden in order, there are lots of places that will rent out this tool for you to use. And while there are other methods to do the same thing as the tiller, this tool is one of the best and will give you some amazing results when it comes to getting the garden in order.

The tiller is a great option to help loosen up the dirt and get the nutrients all moved around. In most cases, you need to prepare the ground so that it is ready to take on the plants; it is usually too hard to just get started and working in just a few minutes. Some people will choose to use a shovel or a spade to do this process, but that adds on a lot of time and effort that you may not have. The tiller speeds up the process and makes it easier than ever to make the ground look amazing for your garden.

    Garden Hose

While rain water is one of the best for your garden, there are going to be times when there isn’t enough rain to keep the plants happy or you will have dry weather that will require more water than the rain that you are getting. Either way, it is important to get a long hose that can go from the house all the way to the garden. Consider a rain wand as well since these help to mist the plants like the rain rather than having it all fall down like a flood.

Rubber is one of the best to use when it comes to a hose. These are pliable and can go through some abuse while still working. Plastic will save you some money, but they are really hard to work with and tend to break more than others. You could consider brass couplings instead of the plastic to keep it sturdy.

Picking out the right gardening tools will make all of the difference. These help you to get your gardening done without all the hassle. Add these to your gardening routine and get started having the best garden in the neighborhood.

Chapter 2: Picking the Right Area for Your Garden

After you have all the tools that you want to use, it is time to pick out the area that you want to use in order to garden. This helps you to get the best area that is going to help out with growing the best plants that you possibly can. Sometimes you may be having issues with your garden, but just changing the location of where the plants are growing will make all the difference. Consider some of these tips for both a home garden and a community garden to get started.

    Home Garden

Home gardening is one of the best ways to grow your garden. You can keep this nearby without any extra traveling. If you are feeling stressed and worried, you can just walk out to the garden and get all the benefits in just seconds. When the food is ready to be harvested, transportation couldn’t be easier when the garden is in your backyard. Here are some of the things that you should consider when picking out an area to garden in your backyard.

    Close to the Home

You should pick out a spot that is close to your home. If you pick out a spot that is far away and you can’t easily see, you are less likely to give it the attention that it needs. Pick a spot that you can easily see from the home so you can run out and give it attention, or so it isn’t ignored when you get busy.

Another option you can go with is to put a fence around the area
