About this ebook
The crew of the pirate ship the Rusty Heap are a fearsome bunch! They're tougher than gristle and barnacle grit. They heave and they ho and they swab and they . . . knit?
Well, one of them does, at least! Unfortunately for Ned, his knitting doesn't go over well with the captain and crew. They urge him to hide his hobby and strive to be scurvier, like pirates should be. But when the briny ocean beast shows up to feast on the Rusty Heap and its crew, maybe Ned's knitting is just the ticket to save the day!
From author Diana Murray and illustrator Leslie Lammle comes the delightfully salty tale of Ned the Knitting Pirate, a boy whose love for yarn and appliqué just doesn't quite let him fit in, but makes him stand out in the best way, instead. With their appealing angle on individuality, Murray's hilarious characters and Lammle's bright illustrations are sure to win over even the most reluctant landlubber.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The pirates are a fierce lot and don't understand why one of their own loves to knit. But when Ned's knitting saves the day, they are happy to embrace his hobby. This is a funny picture book about staying true to oneself. I like how, despite the older pirates' initial objections, Ned can still be a tough pirate while also enjoying knitting. It's a great way to introduce/reinforce the idea that certain activities are not gendered (i.e., letting boys know they aren't "sissies" if they enjoy things besides rough-and-tumble physicality). Because of some of the less common language used (e.g., words like "ye" and "scurvy"), I think this book would work best as an adult read-aloud rather than a child reading to him or herself. Beware though that the book features a song for which you'll have to make up the tune and then recall that tune as the song repeats several times throughout the book. All in all, this a great book for sharing with kids when you want a book to make you laugh but still has an important lesson at its core.
