    Introduction

    From Jen

    My approach to sewing combines the attitudes of the women in my family who came before me. My great aunt was precise and painstaking in her elaborate traditional piecing and hand quilting. My grandmother was frugal and resourceful, using what she had on hand to sew warm, simple patchwork blankets that I slept under in her home for many cold winters. My mother has a make-it-work attitude when approaching her sewing and is an innate problem solver; together she and my father have been a constant source of encouragement for all my artistic endeavors. They challenge me to create my own inventive solutions to creative projects and treat roadblocks as obstacles to be solved and overcome. The result of these varied influences has been one part precision and technique, one part resourcefulness, and two parts pure stubbornness and gusto. For me this book is a compilation of these attitudes, and I sincerely hope it provides you with the technical skills, along with the encouragement, to use your own creativity to create projects that show off your own personal style.

    Designing, sewing, and creating have always been great passions of mine. I love the simplicity of basic skills that lead to complex applications, combined in an infinite number of ways. My grandmothers taught me the value and practice of handmade labors of love in everything from hand-sewn doll clothes and prom dresses to homemade pasta and sauce. My parents are hardworking, resourceful, and clever, leaving a personal touch on all they do. I watched and helped them tackle any and all projects, from laying wood flooring to making Halloween costumes and everything in between. Creative problem solving, self-reliance, and hard work were the examples set before me. My approach to sewing and life is to follow the creative sparks, dive right in, and get started. No goal is out of reach, no project unsolvable. Sometimes results are less perfect than desired, but even then, knowledge is gained. My intention with this book is to share information and ideas to advance your skill set and inspire your creative moxie.

    When we first started working together as student interns in the Family and Consumer Sciences program at Utah State University, we quickly bonded over our job descriptions, which included developing sewing curriculum projects and improvising clothing from recycled materials to promote a sustainable fashion show on campus. Our job was based on creative thinking, problem solving, and improvisation. We quickly figured out that we were destined to collaborate creatively from that point forward.

    When we proposed an idea for a book together, we wanted to share our enthusiasm for experimentation and no-rules creativity in sewing. We are inspired by the fullness of creativity in the sewing world today, sewists bringing their own unique perspective to the projects they create. Our hope is to provide fun and interesting new tools to expand your personal toolbox as well as projects that inspire and empower your own improvisation.

    The book begins with Design Basics to provide a framework for your thinking and helpful hints when approaching a new project. In Toolbox you will find information about all the techniques used in the book: Motif Transfer Methods explains how to get an image or design onto fabric (eight motifs are provided on the pullout to get you started), and Embellishment Techniques shares how to add a personal creative touch to your project. Our intention is to provide a wide sampling of projects in three categories (Wear, Live, and Give) and to show a variety of combinations of motif transfer methods and embellishment techniques so you can have all the tools needed to mix and match projects and techniques and create truly unique projects that show off your personal sewing style. You can even create your own motifs to use in projects to personalize your sewing even further. Take a look at Express Yourself for more mixing-and-matching ideas. The possibilities are infinite!

    We encourage you to shake up your sewing rules a little bit, let loose, and enjoy the process of experimentation and expression in sewing. Keep your creative brain waves flowing and dive right in when inspiration strikes, even if the idea isn’t quite perfect yet. We think you’ll find that the more you allow yourself to experiment and just sew, the more confident you’ll become in finding your own style.

    Design Basics

    The opportunity to express yourself and your creative vision exists in each sewn piece you create, but sometimes it’s hard to know where to start or how to make informed decisions so the end result is successful. Choosing a color palette and combination of fabrics and deciding the details of a project often winds up being a guessing game, until you stumble upon something that just works, but it’s hard to make sense of why it works.

    Whether it’s a conscious practice or not, all designers and artists arm themselves with an arsenal of tools, and after much use, these tools become second nature. These tools are commonly called the elements and principles of design. The principles of design are applied to the elements of design to create a cohesive work that is pleasing to the eye. Not all elements and principles will be found in every project, but often there is a combination of these concepts. Take a look at the individual projects in this book for a brief description of which elements and principles contribute to the success of each project. Along with basic color theory knowledge, the elements and principles of design help us make intentional, curated decisions and give us information about how to create a successful design.
