Armor of Passion - Payton Hart

    CHAPTER 1

When she awoke, the moon was shining down on her. The crickets were chirping and she thought for a moment that she was covered by a blanket. Until she realized that she was outside; her blanket was nothing but the moist night air, and her head ached something awful.

Anne jumped up with a start; her head pounding as she swayed from side to side. She looked for clues as to where she was and what had happened. The last thing that she remembered was falling asleep in the bed of the castle. It was the bed that she had fallen asleep in nearly every day or her life, and nothing was out of the ordinary.

Something dripped from her face, and she reached up in horror to realize there was blood pouring from a wound. It explained the pounding headache. She swayed at the sight of it, and nearly fell.

Her hand touched something, and to her horror, she realized that that something was human flesh. As her eyes adjusted to the light, she realized that she wasn’t alone in the field, but she was the only one who still drew breath.

And that breath formed into a terrifying scream.

John heard the scream echo through the night. A heartbreaking, bone chilling scream that caused him to spur his horse forward.  He knew that riding through the night to get the message through the castle wasn’t the smartest move he ever made in his life, but it was imperative that the message be delivered by dawn tomorrow.  He thought he could navigate by the moon.

However, facing the penalty of delivering a message late was wiped out of his mind when he heard the woman scream. His horse pounded through the forest, heading for the clearing. John prepared for the very worst sight he could imagine, but even his darkest nightmares did not prepare him for the fact that there were bodies littered about the clearing, in various pieces. They were all dead, surely. Something terrible had happened here, something that would start a war.

In the middle of the field, the moonlight shining down on her like a halo, he located the source of the scream. She was pulling herself up from the ground, covered in mud, and what looked like a fresh wound. She had long red hair that was astray down her back, and she was thin and small. She wasn’t a child, although she couldn’t be much older than one. She was perhaps 18 or 19, he guessed, from the look of her.
