DEDICATION
This book is dedicated to my wife, Grace, who gave up some evenings and weekends so it could be written.
Her love, support, and patience were critical to its completion.
DISCLAIMER
Before we begin, please understand that this book will not solve all your problems overnight. The success you derive from this book will be based on the time and effort you put in. A vital ingredient to changing your life is having a sincere willingness to change. Another vital ingredient is being willing to practice honest self-analysis. If there is a problem in your life, you need to acknowledge it, rather than be in denial.
I am not a medical doctor and cannot diagnose you. I also cannot make any promises or guarantees. If you have a substance abuse problem, you may have to consult with a medical professional. The information in this book, however, can be a powerful supplement to help you recover from an addiction.
The advice I give is based on my personal research and life experience. My sincere hope is that the information you gather from this book will improve the quality of your life as it did for me.
THE BOOK’S PURPOSE
Ultimately, this book is intended to help you find greater peace in your life. The information in this book can help you deal with difficult emotions such as stress, anxiety, or fear. If you are struggling with an addiction, you will find invaluable tools to help with your recovery. When I refer to an addiction, I am referring to a pattern of behavior that has the potential of becoming self-destructive. These types of behaviors can include, but are not limited to, the abusive or excessive use of alcohol, drugs, food, sex, or pornography.
When a behavior becomes uncontrollable in your life to the point where you develop a complete dependence on that behavior, you face the risk of becoming enslaved. You become addicted. The information provided in this book will give you tools to gain back control of your life. It is my hope you will be empowered on a very deep level and find a new confidence that will help you live a life you can be proud of.
The information I present is drawn from many different sources. I have attempted to find the gold nuggets in these different sources and translate these nuggets into practical tools that can be applied in your everyday life.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME
I will not claim to be an all-knowing sage. I do believe every person has a purpose in life. I also believe human beings have immense potential to achieve amazing things. Sadly, many people never come to realize this potential. I hope this book will at least give the reader a glimpse of what is possible.
As for my occupation, I am a criminal defense attorney. I often deal with people who have had lapses of judgment and are forced to deal with the consequences that follow. Sometimes their decisions are strongly influenced by an addiction. It is tragic to see an addict feel so out of control and helpless. On some level, those struggling with an addiction may know that
