Model Racing Yachts - Being No. 6 of the New Model Maker Series of Practical Handbooks Covering Every Phase of Model Building and Design - With 90 Illustrations Including 12 Practical Working Designs - Norman G. Taylor

    INTRODUCTION

    The spirits of your fathers

    Shall start from every wave,

For the deck it was their field of fame——

    THOMAS CAMPBELL

SO goes the poem—perhaps it explains the thrill that we in this seafaring country of ours always experience at the sight of any ship of sail cutting her way through the sparkling water. The types of sailing craft are many and varied, but most graceful of all must surely be the Racing Yacht with its tall mast, its fine spread of canvas, and the sleek flowing lines of its hull which offers the minimum resistance to the water. Those truly great ancestors of ours—the pioneers, the explorers, the men who made history—would surely be proud of our fine present-day racing craft, and of their record of achievement.

All the grace and beauty of the full-size craft can be reproduced in miniature by the model maker, who, for the best results, will need the same skill in design and construction and the same art in handling his craft on the water as his ‘full-size’ counterpart.

In presenting this completely revised edition the author sincerely hopes that it will be the means of helping many newcomers to this most fascinating and instructive hobby. It has been especially written to explain fully, clearly, and in simple non-technical language just how to go about constructing your first model, and how to sail it when completed. The hints and tips contained herein, together with the many designs, will be of real help to the beginner and of interest to the expert.

The author gratefully acknowledges his indebtedness to the Model Yachting Association for permission to reproduce extracts from their Rating Rules, and also to Mr. H. E. Andrews of Newcastle-on-Tyne, for permission to include general arrangement drawings of ‘Nimrod’, ‘Allegro’ and ‘Pandora’, and for the help he has so willingly given by supplying plans for these excellent models and much other valuable information.
