THE FARM WOODLAND
EARL L. SCOVELL
Rutgers Extension Forester Earl L. Scovell received his professional training at the University of New Hampshire and the Yale School of Forestry. In turn, he was chief of the first white-pine blister-rust field crew established by the U. S. Department of Agriculture, was engaged in timber cruising for paper and pulp companies in Canada, and served as assistant forester for New Jersey’s State Department of Conservation and Development. At Rutgers, Professor Scovell’s work has included the organization of a comprehensive program of farm woodland management. In the furtherance of this activity, he has had the cooperation of farmers in the establishment of woodland demonstrations in various sections of the state. These demonstrations and the records kept on them have been widely utilized in teaching improved forestry practices to more than 4,500 farm woodland owners in the Garden State. Other phases of Professor Scovell’s work have emphasized the planting to forest crops of much farm land not capable of greater returns from other uses, and the education of rural youth, through 4-H forestry clubs, in the intrinsic values of woodlands and wildlife.
