Gilding - Matt, Burnish And Oil For Painters - Leach Town

    book

    CHAPTER I.

THE tools and materials, apart from gold leaf, required in the practice of gilding, are few and inexpensive. I will here give a list of what might be said to be really necessary:—

    TOOLS.

1.—Half-a-dozen small stoneware pots, about the size of ordinary teacups, any kind that will not readily crack by being warmed on hob or stove; cheap little mugs, costing one penny each, will answer the purpose.

    BRUSHES.

2.—Two or three different sizes of small hog-hair tools. Those which have been ground ready for use, though this is not often used by practised men, as the knife, not being sharp, is slipped in between the fingers of the left hand more quickly.

    AGATE BURNISHER.

Our next, and last, tool of any moment is an Agate Burnisher, in wood handle (as per illustration). There are different shapes, but the one given is most suitable for general work.

    MATERIALS.

The following description of materials, which may be purchased from any good colour shop, especially, and at reasonable prices, from the firms given in this book, gives the state in which the student of Gilding finds it on purchase, and which I propose to call by the name of stock substance, or material of the various kinds, to distinguish it from the material as made ready for use.

    GILDER’S WHITING.

Gilder’s whiting is the finest quality, and made specially free from grit. It is possible, though rather difficult, to buy in a fine powdered state; but one can so very easily reduce to powder by a rolling-pin that it is not worth troubling about.

    GILDER’S CLAY (Stock).

Gilder’s Clay is a very good quality of China clay, specially ground for the purpose, costing about 3 1/2d. or 4d. a pound.
