About this ebook
Every orphan needs a dad, so why not use Billy’s? He’s in the bush somewhere, so Billy leads his new friends into the never–never to find him: nine young shoeless orphans, ten if you include Amber, plus four dogs and a baby kangaroo. What could possibly go wrong? How about a kidnapping? A spear–pointed stand–off with the police? Or what about a run–in with a dangerous gang? You might need oxygen for this one because it’s going to leave you breathless.

URBAN HUNTERS is laugh–out–loud, gut–churning, heart–wrenching storytelling at its best. Unlike anything you’ve ever read, in typical Taaffe fashion. Hilarious as usual. Always surprising. Wonderful!

What a Load of Bull
Are we there yet?
Molly asked, still angling for another turn on Billy’s shoulders.
It’s still my turn,
Lucy said.
But I’m tired.
Come here, Molly,
Amber said. You can have a go on my shoulders.
To her credit, Molly had been walking for another couple of hours in bare feet without even having her afternoon nap.
Not far now,
Billy said, pointing to a ridgeline half a dozen kilometres away. My cave up there.
I can walk by myself,
Buttons declared while chewing on another strip of dog jerky and checking on Joey in her shoulder bag. The baby kangaroo was sound asleep. Buttons was the youngest of the troupe at only five, and full of excitement over the prospect of finding Billy’s family in the bush, old man Cobar in particular. She bounded over a rush of grass and trotted a few steps to keep up with Cocky in the lead. I don’t like that mongrel old man what grabbed Amber’s arm,
she told him.
"Yeah, Brody’s a mongrel. If he comes back, I’m gonna spear him in the guts." Cocky thrust his new spear into a steaming cow–patty and declared him good and dead.
He won’t be back,
Amber said. But it’s good to know you’re here to protect me, Cocky.
I killed that mongrel dog!
I know. Brody would take one look at all those fangs on your necklace and run away for sure.
Yeah! I’m the mongrel killer.
More like a cockroach killer,
Courtney sniggered.
MOOO.
A loud bellow came from somewhere unseen within the paddock making everyone turn to look: nine orphans, ten if you counted Amber, a baby kangaroo, four dogs somewhere up ahead, and Billy. They may not have been able to see the beast but the sound of its charging hooves was unmistakable.
RUN!
Amber yelled as a big grey Brahman bull launched over a rise.
The fence was still a good twenty metres away with the bull closing in fast, so Billy juggled his spear, grabbed hold of Lucy on his shoulders, scooped Buttons up under his arm and ran like the blazes.
MOOOOOOO!
The bull sounded ten times louder now that he was within eyesight.
RUN FASTER!
Billy yelled.
Walter was first to the fence. He held the strands of barbed wire open while the others scrambled through. Billy didn’t bother going through; he unceremoniously dropped Lucy and Buttons over it and grabbed Molly off Amber’s shoulders to do the same with her. Grace scrambled through with Splash and Crash right behind her, leaving Courtney to hold up the others while fussing over the razor sharp barbs. Amber was on the verge of pushing her through when she and Billy turned just in time to see Cocky facing down the bull with his spear at the ready.
Cocky RUN!
Amber screamed.
But it was too late, Cocky didn’t have time to run. He hurled his spear and to his credit, it flew true.
The bull saw it coming and as everything slowed down, everyone saw the whites of his eyes following the path of the spear. It missed his head by mere millimetres and hit hard into the huge bulge above his broad shoulders. But all it did was bounce off.
By this time, Billy had notched his own spear into his woomera and was reaching back to hurl it when the bull cried out in fright at the spear hitting him. He skidded to a halt in a fluster of frightened feet, stopping right in front of a defiant Cocky. He turned tail as fast as his hooves would carry him, bucking and bellowing and screaming in terror with his tail buried deep between his legs.
Showed him,
Cocky casually remarked while picking up his spear and checking the point. Have to sharpen this.
Billy was smiling at Cocky’s gall when Amber barged past him and pushed Cocky hard in the chest.
WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?
She yelled it right in his face.
Cocky was so shocked that all he could do was stare through huge terrified eyes.
YOU COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED YOU, IDIOT! That was a bloody BULL! Not some silly little dog!
Cocky burst into tears.
He was just trying to protect us,
Billy said as gently as he could.
WELL HE WOULDN’T HAVE TO PROTECT US IF YOU DIDN’T INSIST ON LEADING US ALL INTO THIS STUPID BLOODY BUSH TO FIND YOUR FATHER!
But we all need a father, Amber.
A horrible silence loomed as the enormity of Billy’s statement suffocated them. Amber had only just finished explaining how her own father had died just a few days earlier. Her lip began to quiver so Billy instantly went in for the hug, his head tilting and his arms spread wide.
YOU’RE AN IDIOT TOO, BILLY!
She pushed him out of
