    The Find - Lena Goldfinch

    Chapter One

    Monster in the Cornfield

    Tennessee, October 1909

That summer and on into October I mucked stalls until my eyes crossed. By then, I’d almost forgotten what wrong I’d done. Not that I could ever really forget with Pa constantly frowning at me and shaking his head like I was his greatest disappointment in life.

It had all started out as a prank. I remember hearing Charlotte’s scream first, because I’d been listening for it, and then running to her room. I could see it even now with no trouble, like someone had drawn me a picture of it. Her room had been lit up from my father’s lantern—he was already there by the time I showed up. I remember how his light cast long shadows on Charlotte’s pink and white striped wallpaper and curtains. I’d thought it looked weirdly like the inside of a circus tent, and I loved it.

A kind of hot lightning sizzled through my veins, lighting me up from the inside, and I felt so alive. Scared too, a little, because I knew Pa was about to catch me, but mostly I was just excited. I’d set all this in motion—me.

I remembered grabbing the poor snake off the wood-plank floor where Charlotte had flung it.

But it’s just a little garden snake, I’d argued over the sound of my little sister’s squealing. At the time, I’d wished I’d been there to see her wake up with it in her bed. Looking back, maybe I shouldn’t have grinned quite so big. But it had been so funny, and I couldn’t stop laughing.

Mama was hovering beside me, looking at Charlotte, looking at me. Looking at the snake. She’d come in after me, I guess.

I got something in me—some devil, I guess—and I shook it in her face too.

The sound of her screaming filled my ears.

    I saw her stumbling backwards.

Saw her hit her head against the wall.

    The thud. A sickening sound.

    Then she started to cry.

I don’t know why but I kept on laughing. Maybe because what was happening hadn’t quite hit me yet. I was still holding that snake too, and when it dawned on me I’d made my mom cry, I squeezed
