The Decline of Robin Williams
There have been few men as simultaneously talented, funny, sympathetic, and enthusiastically passionate about their craft as comedian and actor Robin Williams. Although he was born into a privileged existence as the son of a Detroit motor company executive, Williams quickly abandoned his place as heir to a business empire to try his hand at acting and comedy. The young man’s unbridled enthusiasm and energy, as well as his hard-working attitude, quickly brought Williams success on the stand-up comedy scene in San Francisco. What followed was a whirlwind of success. From his successful years of stand-up touring, Williams was able to transition into television and from television into film.
By the time he was a more mature and established actor, Williams had risen from the ranks of simple comedian to become a respected and award-winning actor. Though his artistry brought joy to millions around the world, Williams battled the private demons of depression, a disease that ultimately caused the actor to take his own life in 2014. Despite the tragic early end to an astounding career, the laughter and emotion that Williams brought to his every work continues to live on and will persist in inspiring audiences for decades to come.
Early Life and Decision to Become an Actor
Robin McLaurin Williams was born on July 21, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois. Contrary to the stories of struggling working class aspiring actors who must fight their way out of poverty into affluence, Williams was born into a lucrative lifestyle. Williams’s father, Robert, was a senior executive in the Lincoln-Mercury division of Ford Motor’s billion dollar empire. Williams’s mother, Laurie, was a former runway fashion model who still made the occasional media appearance.
Every nook and cranny of the Williams family history was graced with distinguished and reputable figures, from senators to governors to millionaire moguls. Growing
