    Vladimir Nabokov was born in 1899 to an aristocratic Russian family. He was forced to leave his home country during the Russian Revolution and fled to Europe, where he began studying literature and wrote his first works. He notably published The Defence (1930) and The Gift (1937) which gained him recognition as a Russian-speaking writer.

    Nabokov moved to the United States and acquired American citizenship in 1945. He refused to return to the USSR, and wrote in English. He became quite famous with this new audience. His fame exploded on a global scale in 1955 with the publication of Lolita. He subsequently published numerous novels. He died in France in
