Her first book, She Came to Stay was published in 1943. The philosopher contributed largely to existentialism and worked with the journal founded by Sartre, Les Temps modernes (Modern Times). She received the Goncourt prize in 1954 for her novel The Mandarins.
She is also one of the icons of the feminist movement: she was in favour of abortion and published one of the key books on French feminism: The Second Sex.
