    Introduction

    The idea of writing a book about strength, fortitude and will power was a convergence of three new endeavors in my life: a hobby, an athletic challenge and my career. In 2010 I took up blogging as a fun late-night hobby while my kids were sleeping. I decided to write about kettlebells, since they were still fairly new on the fitness scene. I created a WordPress blog titled Kettlebell Hell and started writing Cast Iron Strength, thoughts about the amazing power of kettlebells. For more than six years my entries have ranged from daily workouts, to music and food suggestions, to the occasional commentary of my strongly-held convictions.

    However, something unexpected happened. After several years of swinging kettlebells, I uncovered a new strength that led me to pursue open water swimming. I was faced with a whole new set of athletic challenges ranging from storms at sea and ocean
