      Style allows you to express yourself without ever having to say a word. Your clothing, your shoes, your accessories and your makeup all work together in speaking for you. You can make a first impression without even introducing yourself. The way you dress can impact your social interactions and even your professional success. Since so much of communication is nonverbal, you need to make sure that the way you look is in line with the way you feel.

      Think about a job interview, an important meeting, or a special occasion. You want to be taken seriously, and you need to thoroughly express your value. There’s a reason why you don’t wear sweatpants and slippers out – and dressing for success is the reason. Your outfit says a lot about you, and in a professional context, it does a lot of the talking.

      Are you a determined go-getter, or a casual and pragmatic worker? It shows in the way you present yourself. Something like a pantsuit and a small bag shows that you’re prepared for anything. A fitted suit and intense shoes shows that you’re confident and ready to take on the world.

They wear fitted clothes, are less afraid to show a little skin, and are always ready to take charge when the need for a bold leader arises.

      If you need to move more in one direction than the other, simply changing your personal style can help you get into the right mindset. Have you ever heard the expression Dress for the job you want, not for the job you have? The same principal applies. If you want to be more outgoing and fierce, change your style to match your intentions. If you want to sink into the background, be a little more reserved in your style choices.

      Maybe you live for the nightlife, frequenting concerts and trendy cocktail bars. Maybe you’re a little more outdoorsy, preferring to spend your leisure time working in the garden or going for a scenic hike. Maybe you work an office job and your preferred way to unwind involves a good book and a glass of wine. Your style should reflect your lifestyle in order for things to run smoothly.

      For example, you can’t climb a mountain in heels. You can’t wear hiking boots to the office, and you probably wouldn’t go see your favorite band in casual office attire. The style you choose should directly reflect the things you plan to do when you leave the house. If your personal tastes in fashion and accessories don’t necessarily reflect the kind of activities you like to do, this gives you the opportunity to craft a unique personal style.

      Put a spin on your style selection. There’s no reason you can’t be glam in the office, or luxurious on a camping trip. The trick is discovering the right compromises between function and form. This is what truly sets you apart from others around you, allowing you to shine.

      Remember that when it comes to style, everything is subjective. At the end of the day, you should be who you want to be. Don’t worry about the judgement of others. You need to be comfortable with the way you present yourself, and you should never let anybody stop you.

      1.1 History of Costume

      The first humans probably didn’t care much about what they wore. They were mostly concerned with staying warm and protected, which usually lead to shapeless garments constructed from the pelts of large mammals. When the main motivation was survival, there was no need to be bothered with textiles.

      As civilization around the world grew stronger, clothing became a significant priority.

      From the first century to the twelfth century, people mainly wore loose, flowing textiles in the area that would come to be known as the developed world. More often times than not, these garments resembled gowns, and they were regarded as unisex clothing. These were shapeless garments designed to cover the body, and they weren’t necessarily artistic expressions of design.

      Over time, garments continued to be shaped and fitted to the body, and accessories were worn for embellishment. Modern fashion as we know it first started to take shape in the 13th century, when clothing became fitted and textiles were available in a wider range of patterns.  Fashion began to take shape in the area of Europe now known as the United Kingdom, and continued to spread west across the rest of the European continent.

      In the thirteenth century, modesty took precedence over design. This trend began in the twelfth century, and not much changed over the course of 100 years. Everyday gowns went from the neck down to the floor, with long sleeves that often opened widely at the ends. These gowns were slightly more tailored than the previous gowns, which were often flowy and shapeless. Many people chose to accessories these dressing gowns with belts around the waist, creating a more flattering silhouette.

      Accentuating the human form became a little more commonplace in the 14th century. Gowns remained floor length, but did not drag across the floor while women walked. This is the era when laces were incorporated into the back of most articles of clothing such as tops and dresses. These laces could be tightened to make garments former fitting. While sleeves were still long, necklines were wider and designed to show collarbones.

      Around this time in India, garments were still wrapped around the body, rather than laced. African garments were similar, but ultimately used less cloth. Since the heat is a concern in African countries, a lot more skin was exposed for convenience. In the Middle East, garments were wrapped very loosely, as modesty was a concern. These garments stuck around without changing much until the 21st century.

      In this century, the modifications to the traditional garments in Europe may not seem much, but they were one of the first steps of major evolution towards today’s modern garments. The boxy, open neckline of the fourteenth century became a deep V-neck. This was true not only for European garments, but also many variations of traditional Chinese dress. Belts were worn at the high waist and usually much thicker. This allowed a clear shape of the waistline through the bulky, draping fabric.

      The sixteenth century was the Tudor era, and you’ve probably seen a lot of costumes that follow the guidelines for typical Tudor dress. In Germany, fashion didn’t change much from where it was in the fifteenth century, but Spanish influence extended to Europe. This meant gowns often sat at the waist, rather than the high-waist area. Corsets became largely important among those who could afford them, and so did elaborate patterned embellishments. Lace, fancy buttons, and embroidery became common among nobility.

      The Elizabethan era changed the fit of garments significantly. Sleeves, which used to be fitted, became larger. These puffy or ruffled sleeves created the illusion of robust arms, while narrow, corseted waists remained the same. The seventeenth century also brought the popularization of the famous ruffled or fanned out collars that many people associate with Shakespearean theater. Necklines then were much lower than they had been previously, plunging far down the chest in a rounded shape.

      The largest modification of fashion in the eighteenth century came not from the actual garments themselves, but from the usage of special undergarments. Large hoop skirts were popular, as were panniers. Panniers were undergarments designed to hold dresses out very far at the waist, making the waistline appear to be long and broad, much like a table. Dresses were often constructed in such a way that the petticoat could be seen through the folds of the bottom of the fabric, and this lead to decorative petticoats.

      The Victorian era reinvented shapes and silhouettes. Rather than the boxy and unbalanced silhouette created by the pannier, people in the Victorian area preferred a traditional bell-shaped skirt that included a bustle at the back. The bustle added a new dimension from the back, replacing the dimension from the front in the previous century. Corsets also connected into skirts with sharp V shapes, creating angles that were more flattering to the
