It was Christmas Eve, 1932, eight o'clock in the evening. There were no customers at that hour, but Mike Matthews wouldn't close the diner for at least another two hours. People might be out and about on Christmas Eve, wanting something to eat, or a cup of coffee.
Mike hadn't decorated the diner for Christmas that year. He'd lost his wife of fifty years just two months ago, and somehow he just hadn't felt like putting up a tree and decorating. At 75 years of age, he just didn't have the enthusiasm for Christmas trees and colored lights that he once had.
He and his wife had purchased the diner about thirty years
