    Once upon a time , I was so screwed.

    I sat in the meeting and listened to my boss promise the impossible to the high muckety-mucks, and to keep my job I had to keep my mouth firmly shut.

    Problem was, I was the person who’d be responsible for the impossible task, which meant my job was on the line anyway.

    The project I was working on was for something I called Oroflex—bendy gold wire, essentially. Yeah, I know it’s not like I’m curing Banshee Syndrome or the common swamp disease. But do you know how hard it is to make gold wire the regular way? The jewelry industry would be turned on its head, and that’s not even counting the dragons, who have their own separate union.

    We’d done some interesting experiments and the results were promising, but we were still far from actual creation of the stuff.
